    Prologue

Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.  Genesis 29:20

    Chapter 1

The plate clatters noisily to the stone floor, breaking the peace of the late December, Pennsylvanian morning in which the two young Amish women go about their chores in the kitchen.

Hannah is startled by the sudden noise, breaking her humming of choir songs she had been taking part in as she diligently went about her work. She looks to her close friend to see that she is already picking up the pieces of broken crockery off of the floor. The girl stops this all of a sudden however. She crouches down onto the floor herself, her head in her hands. Hannah is quickly by her side.

Gloria. She speaks the other woman’s name soothingly. Gloria, there’s no need to cry; it’s only one plate of many. Hannah strokes her friend’s blonde hair, hoping to calm the sobs she can hear, despite Gloria’s attempts to hide her face.

That’s not what is wrong. Gloria speaks up, shaking her head. She gently removes Hannah’s hand from her, not wanting comfort for the reasons her friend thinks she does right now. Still Hannah can’t stop looking at her friend with concern. There’s obviously something still upsetting her. Seeing that she has already revealed too much for this event to go forgotten, Gloria does reveal her true feelings after releasing a deep sigh to fully calm her nerves and to make it easier to talk.

It’s this wedding I have been arranged to take part in. She tells Hannah. Hannah’s blue eyes widen at hearing this.

But Gloria, I thought you were happy with this. Your family... everyone has thought that you were for all of this time. The celebration is due to take place in only a few days time! She reminds the girl, causing Gloria only more grief it appears as the blonde’s hazel eyes start to water again. She makes short work of wiping the tears away with her hand this time.

Well I’m not. She reiterates. I’ve been hiding the way I truly feel for all of this time, so I wouldn’t disappoint you all, but I can’t stand the idea of marrying someone when I’m so young. Someone I do not even know; I’m not ready! She cries out again. Hannah moves closer to hug her friend supportively.

But it has been a long time Gloria. She tells the girl carefully. We are both the same age and I am already married to David. Your family only wants what’s best for you, for you to be supported in life once you leave your family’s haus. Gott’s love can only do so much to help towards that Gloria. She reminds the girl.

I know that. Gloria has already thought all of this through herself. That’s the main reason she has stayed so quiet about her unhappiness regarding this marriage up until now, so Gloria’s words do little to comfort her. But this decision still feels so wrong, as though this isn’t the path Gott has planned for me. I have always wanted to travel Hannah, to explore the world. You know that. Hannah frowns slightly here. Being such a close friend to her, Gloria has made these wishes known in the past, but making them known is all she has ever done.

Then Gloria... why have you never worked towards that goal? She asks. You’ve talked and talked about doing these things, but that talk can only take you so far my friend. If you’ve never even spoken to your Familye about these desires, how are they even to know that they exist? Maybe your own reluctance to do that is an indication that that is not truly what you want out of life either.

I don’t know. Gloria sighs again. That is what I truly want out of life, I know that much but... it’s such a big step to leave my family to make that journey. As much as I want to go, the thought of what could happen to me out there scares me. Just as this marriage to Samuel does. She loops the conversation back to her main concern and tears start to fall again, despite her not wanting them to. This time Hannah helps Gloria to her feet and turns her around to face her, resting her hands on her shoulders.

Gloria, you must know what that means. She smiles. It doesn’t look like Gloria is aware of this however as she only stares back at her friend, tears no longer falling but her head is tilted slightly in confusion. It means that if you’re truly scared about what may happen to you out there on your own, perhaps the right path for you is to marry Samuel, so that he can be there to support you through all of those worries. Gloria shakes her head again, but slower this time. She’s still so unsure about all of this. Hannah pulls her into another hug, not giving up on her understanding smile or her own support of her friend. Give this marriage a chance at the very least. I know that your Familye would not choose a cruel man for you to wed. In time, you’ll come to love Samuel, I’m sure of it.

It’s here that Hannah believes her friend has started sobbing again at first, but it soon becomes apparent that she’s caught in a coughing fit instead. Hannah guides her to a chair at the kitchen table and quickly fetches a glass of water for her. Gloria does her best to resist this caring treatment all the while, and downplay what is taking place within her body, but this isn’t easy as the coughing continues until she has drunk almost the full glass of water
