About this ebook
When June Milano, to her relief, learns that her good friend, Sonya Johansen, has broken up with her fiance, Rufus Fenstermacher, she quickly fixes her up with her husband's college roommate, Jack Dalton. What she doesn't realize, however, is that the two of them already have met and not under the best of circumstances. So, when the two of them arrive at the Milanos's apartment, sparks fly and not the romantic kind.
As if that isn't bad enough, Elmer Tweedle, an escapee from a mental hospital, shows up, brandishing a gun and looking for his long lost love, Lucille Lanigan, who used to live there and has since passed away. With the help of their landlady, Rose Clancy, who is desperate for a soul-mate--even one like Elmer will suffice--the Milanos finally get the zany situation under control.

Although I’ve made my living as a teacher and guidance counselor, I’ve always had a passion for writing. Thomas Bouregy and Company published my novel, Return to Paradise Cove, under their Avalon imprint. Two of my one-act plays, A Different Kind of Death, and The Flirt, have been produced, respectively, in New Haven, Connecticut, and Sacramento, California. Short stories of mine have appeared in commercial magazines such as Action and True Romance as well as in certain literary and professional ones.

CAST OF CHARACTERS
SONYA JOHANSEN: An intelligent, feisty, and driven young bank executive
JACK DALTON: A mechanical genius, who likes to do his own thing and,
although usually easygoing, can be tough when necessary
JUNE MILANO: A newlywed, who obviously wears the pants in the
family and is hell-bent on fixing SONYA up with JACK
DICK MILANO: A loving and witty husband who realizes the kitchen is
the only place in the apartment where he reigns supreme
RUFUS FENSTERMACHER: SONYA'S pompous and superficial ex-fiancé
ROSE CLANCY: A middle-aged landlady, painted, rouged, and powdered
in hopes of catching a man--any man including a
fugitive from a loony bin
ELMER TWEEDLE: An escapee from the Bedlam Hospital
ACT ONE
SETTING: We are on a small island in Quincy Bay. Drawn up on its shore, waterlogged
and bashed in on one side, is a rowboat in front of which all the action takes
place.
AT RISE: It is mid-morning and JACK is slouched against the side of a large rock.
Pacing back and forth in front of him is SONYA. Because both are
disheveled and soaking wet, we can assume they just came out of the water.
And from the expression on their faces and their body language, it is obvious
they are not happy about it.
SONYA
At least you have your rowboat.
JACK
(grabbing the edge of his Tee-shirt and wringing it out)
Because of you it's been turned into a bathtub.
SONYA
(stopping her pacing and turning to him)
I don't know what you're complaining about. My sailboat's floating out on the bay.
JACK
It's probably trying to catch up to my oars.
SONYA
Very funny.
JACK
It serves you right and I'd suggest you change its name from A Summer's Delight to A Seasonal Disaster.
SONYA
(hands on hips and glaring at him)
Must you be so rude?
JACK
Look, lady--and I use that term in the loosest sense--because of your negligence or stupidity--take your pick--I just narrowly escaped serious injury. I also lost a two hundred dollar rod and reel--not to mention an expensive tackle box and a pair of oars.
SONYA
(making a face)
If it'll make you feel any better, I'll reimburse you for your lost toys.
JACK
(ignoring her offer)
And just in case nobody's told you, a sailboat's not supposed to be used as a lethal weapon.
SONYA
Why didn't you blow your whistle to warn me?
JACK
(shaking his head in disbelief)
I was minding my own business, trying to do some fishing, when you slammed into my boat, almost drowning me. And now you have the unmitigated gall to blame me.
SONYA
(triumphantly)
Because you didn't have a whistle or a life jacket both of which are required by law.
JACK
Now I suppose you'll have me walk the plank.
SONYA
Besides, you used poor judgment by fishing in a channel used by sailboats from the yacht club.
JACK
Now just one moment there, Judge Judy. Since when is it a crime to fish anywhere out on this bay?
(Ignoring him, SONYA looks out across the water.)
JACK
Are you expecting somebody?
SONYA
Yes, as a matter of fact I am.
(impaling him on the end of a withering stare)
I'm sure Rufus'll be here soon.
JACK
(with a wry smile)
Who's Rufus? The family pet?
SONYA
For your information, he just happens to be my fiancé.
JACK
(arching an eyebrow)
Oh, really?
SONYA
(haughtily tossing her head)
It may come as a surprise to you but I have one.
JACK
I'm not surprised; I'm shocked.
SONYA
Very funny.
(shaking her head in disgust
