About this ebook

The year is 1887 and Daisie Deane decides to become a Mail Order Bride after her parents tried to force her getting married to a rich but rather boring gentleman.

Young Daisie Deane is growing tired of her boring intended husband and the expectations put on by her parents. She decides to follow in her eldest sister’s footsteps and look for a husband far away from her home in Boston. With the help of her faithful servant, Wilson, Daisie heads off to meet the Texan bachelor, Henry Gerard, in Hillsboro. Their relationship is tense and dysfunctional due to secrets and debts in his past, but they eventually manage to come to an understanding. The real problem comes when Henry’ old enemy, Ed Butch Cassidy, returns to get his revenge on the former macho Texas Ranger. With little help from the local law enforcement, Henry must get his old team to help him save his old friend and relative, Kai. Meanwhile, Daisie must learn to finally become a mature woman and become a help to others instead of waiting to be taken care of herself.

    Chapter 1 – March 1887, Boston, MA

This was turning out to possibly be the most boring day out in the history of their relationship. Daisie Deane had suspected that the date would be pretty uneventful – the last slew of them certainly had not been exciting - but today was breaking the mold of tediousness. Although Boston, Massachusetts was in an unusually beautiful form today, the consistent blathering coming from the man across the table was speedily ruining it.  Even the chaperone, Mr. Wilson, was being put to sleep as he sat a few chairs away. Daisie thought his presence was rather superfluous; both of them were quite aware that there was no chance that anything scandalous would happen at this rate.

Rolling a blonde curl around her small finger, the young woman tried to stay awake as Henry Johnson moved on to the topic of when forks were invented. Did you know that the use of the fork was first started by the Byzantine Empire? Holding his silver utensil intently, he continued, Theirs looked rather peculiar compared the ones we use now, of course. They usually had only two prongs and resembled small fire pokers...

Daisie started to chew on one of the pastries sitting in the center of their table before sharply reprimanding herself. She could not afford to go back to her bigger dresses if she wanted even a chance of finding a better man; especially one that did not dribble on about such mundane things. If Henry Johnson’s mother had not been one of her mother’s most important clients, Daisie would not have hesitated to walk away right now.

`Instead, she decided to go for a sneakier approach. As Henry was distracted in his impromptu history lesson, Daisie met Wilson’s eyes and gave a pouting look. Please save me.

The old man seemed to get the message, despite his drooping eyes. Clearing his throat he said, I do apologize for interrupting this lovely meeting, but I am afraid that Miss Deane was instructed to come home a bit earlier than usual today.

Thank you, she mouthed as Wilson helped her to retrieve her burgundy coat and parasol. Daisie could barely contain her joy as she left the poor man behind her. Good-bye, Henry! I’ll be sure to send a notice as to when we can meet again! Which will hopefully be next year.

As the young woman was helped into the horse carriage, she heard Wilson say, I do wish you would try to give him a chance, Miss Deane. He seems like quite a harmless young lad.

Daisie scoffed. Harmless is right. I do not want a gentle boy, Wilson. I want a real man. Putting
