Despite being a bit concerned with his temper towards others, things go rather well until his irresponsible brother, Joshua, comes to stay. The growing tension, combined with a devastating plague to their livestock, serves to drive the marriage apart. After Joshua is kidnapped by his old outlaw gang, however, the two must work together to save his life and stop the criminals from hurting anyone else.

Chapter 1 - May 1869, New York City, NY
The Yarborough’s house was looking exceptionally clean today. It was even possibly the most immaculate in Greenwich Village. There was no big party going on this evening. The mistress of the household simply wanted to ensure that the young maidservant was aware of her place. She had done something nearly unforgivable, and the noble woman could not tolerate such behavior from anyone that was on her payroll.
I sincerely hope you have learned your lesson, Miss Fauverney,
the stern voice of Mrs. Yarborough called behind her. Stealing is quite a horrific offense.
Yes, Mrs. Yarborough,
Vera said monotonously, standing in front of the freshly cleaned full-length mirror. Looking down at her red hands, she was surprised to find that she could not even feel the sting of her raw flesh anymore.

I’m already as thin as a twig, she thought worriedly as she looked into the mirror.
You have done an adequate job as usual. So I suppose you are entitled to a meal tonight,
Mrs. Yarborough said after much contemplation.
Vera involuntarily sighed a breath of relief. Perhaps she does have a heart, after all.
However, I still feel that as your guardian I would be doing you a disservice if I simply let this incident slide by so easily,
the woman added, her thin mouth breaking into a grin.
Vera tried not to wince at the sight of the mistress’ unnaturally white teeth. As she saw the brown riding whip being taken out from behind the woman’s back, Vera’s eyes narrowed. She was planning on doing this all along.
Placing one bony hand on her left shoulder, Mrs. Yarborough readied the short flair with a strong grip. Vera could only brace
