    Chapter 1

He had given up. Shaun Wegner had done everything humanely possible, searched everywhere, every night club and party attended for the last two weeks for the green- eyed girl he met two weeks before, from a distance actually. They shared the same space for a moment and in his mind that counted as meeting her. How could a girl like her be interested in a man like him? Not in real life anyway. He wasn’t much of a looker. Not even close, in his opinion. He wished for the body and looks of some hunk he watched in his movies, but instead was trying to make do with his rather less flattering physique. His slim and long brown- eyed face was covered, more often than not, with a dorky- looking glasses fit for his great- great grandmother and his dark brown hair, not as slick as he wished, complimented his face. Not much of a compliment, he would think. Of American and French decent, Shaun grew up in Africa after his parents moved when he was barely ten from America, giving him a funny accent to show for it. Now, he spent most of his adult life living alone in Manhattan, New York, having moved back in his late teens.

Sitting at the café, pretty much fed up with everything in his life, looking into the cup of his lukewarm black coffee and waiting for Aaron, his childhood friend, Shaun wondered why he ventured out looking for that green- eyed girl anyway. He guessed that maybe for a minute, life was really like the movies and a girl of her caliber might actually be interested in a dorky, struggling artist. Not exactly an artist. He was an IT consultant at a telecommunication firm, but what he really wanted to do was paint and he had been doing so anytime he was free. Unfortunately, his paintings didn’t sell and as time passed, it was becoming an unrealized dream. He knew what he needed to make it a reality- inspiration; a muse. Well, it turned out life was just what he knew it to be- unfair and unromantic. He closed his eyes and sighed deeply, trying to play back the night he saw her. The green eyes that dazzled him till this day. That night started like any other. T.V on, standing in the middle of his apartment with a canvas in front of him and a pencil behind his ear, trying to draw inspiration which had often been non- existent. Frustrated, he would run downstairs to the local bar a few blocks away. But that night was different. As he ran down the stairs of his apartment building and onto the sidewalk, he felt liberated in an odd way. He had run down these stairs almost every night and never had he felt the way he did that night. He felt a sense of joy, of sudden inspiration and thought to run back up the stairs to his apartment and finally put something on his canvas which had been waiting for weeks now to be touched. Instead, he performed his ritual of walking down the street and into Reggie’s Club, his regular hang out, for a few drinks. He ordered his usual, vodka on the rocks and as he gulped down the shot, he noticed the usual crowd of wannabes- actors, artists, musicians, and painters, dancing to the same songs heard almost every night or chatting idly and out of the corner of his eye, he saw her. She was at the far end of the club talking to a group of people he didn’t recognize and playing with the olive in her cocktail. Her long, dark, lustrous hair, her model-like physique, her oval shaped face with just the perfect huge green eyes that had graced his dreams every day since that day. She was a breath of fresh air and he could tell she was not from around. No, this one had an aura of class and tenderness. From her red velvety dress that reached just above her knees showing off her long legs to her silky soft looking skin and her face, which had just enough make up, he knew he was drawn to her. And she could possibly be a muse to him. He was mesmerized. He reluctantly turned to Joe, the bartender and asked about her. Her name was Elaine and it was the second time she came to the club. Elaine. Her name danced around in his mind and lips for well over five minutes and when he had mastered enough courage to finally approach her, she was gone, without a trace. No one had seen her or where she had gone as if this green- eyed beauty had been a figment of his imagination. He searched in every corner of the club, searched the sidewalk, walked a few blocks down the street, all in vain. How could she have just disappeared? And into thin air, it seemed.

    Sir? Excuse me, sir?

Oh yes, did you say something? Shaun immediately snapped out of his daydreaming.

Yes. I asked if you needed anything else. A refill, perhaps? Although she sounded polite enough, her face was that of annoyance. Obviously, the waitress had been waiting for his response for a while and was getting impatient.

Uh… yes. My coffee has turned cold. Give or take, he had been re-living that moment for almost fifteen minutes now. As he picked up his mobile phone on the table and was about to call Aaron for the third time, he walked through the door, smiling apologetically for his lateness, showing off that charming smile the ladies always fell for. And today, just like any other day he met Aaron, he wondered why they were friends. Aaron had the looks of a male model cut right out of a fitness magazine. The fine slick black hair, the perfectly tanned skin and all of six inch muscle and a dimple in each cheek any time he smiled off his white teeth. In real life, guys like Aaron were never friends with guys like him, but thanks to their parents’ friendship, they were stuck with each other. More like a forced friendship of some sorts until it became a real one. He was grateful however, because Aaron had always been there for him regardless.

As he sat opposite him in his silky blue shirt opened two buttons down, revealing an inch of his chest hair, the waitress, name-tagged Bella arrived with his refill and as expected was already lost in Aaron’s smile standing there more or less drooling like a teenager, as she took his order. I’ll have what he’s having, beautiful, and your number on the side. He flashed his infamous smile and Bella giggled like a child retreating reluctantly to the counter. Gosh, how did he do it? Shaun wished he had that kind of charm and charisma.

Hey, concentrate. I’ve been sitting here for the past half hour waiting for you. You could at least apologize before wandering off into your world again. Shaun said half- annoyed.

Jeez man, relax. You can’t blame me if they all want me, now can you? he grinned. Why do guys like Aaron always think they were God’s gift to women? Shaun wondered. Okay, okay I’m sorry I was a little late. Now are you going to tell me what’s been eating you up lately? I’m worried about you man. I barely hear from you and you are almost never at Reggie’s.

He hadn’t told Aaron about his encounter or near encounter with Elaine and his frantic search for her since that day. He was still trying to convince himself that it all
