About this ebook

James was surrounded by fear. He and everyone else with Asperger’s had been thrown into a concentration camp, and fear was everywhere. His fellow inmates had no idea what was going on. Innocent victims: that’s what they were. The government had obviously panicked, losing control and giving into external pressures. After they revealed that everyone on the autistic spectrum descended from aliens, they used these camps all over the world, supposedly to protect them, to keep them safe. But in reality, they felt the need to control them. They feared that, when the time came, they would attack the human race. James couldn’t help but feel sorry for them. They didn’t know what was going on, that Earth was going to be invaded by the Nequitians, using his brother’s DNA. He had to escape. Outside these walls were drones set to contain them, but James was going to have to save the world. He had to so he could save his brother.

    TORONTO, ONTARIO—George

Just a few more minutes. That’s all I need, that’s all I want, that’s all I ask for. Just a few more minutes. He was close. He had been waiting patiently for almost a year, but now he was close. He used to be a respected biomedical engineer, until he found out the truth about his friend. Now he was simply an obsessed fool trying to rescue his love, saving her from the aliens, saving her from her husband. He quickly made a left that sent him down a large suburban street on the outskirts of Toronto. I’m on the right street. Now to find the right house, thought George as he slowed down to read the door numbers. 5084, 5085, 5086. Then he stopped.

He dried his sweaty hands on his pant legs, took a deep breath, and opened the glove compartment. Then he sat there, staring at the gun, preparing himself for what was to come.

Suddenly his phone rang, making him jump. It was Cole. He had probably figured it all out by now. But George wanted to do this alone; he wanted to do this his way. He took another deep breath and turned off his phone.

He was determined. He knew exactly what to do. He quickly grabbed the gun and made his way to the front door. He held the gun firmly, opened the door, and stepped inside. He found himself standing in a spacious living room, one of those modern, open space designs.

The first person he encountered was a teenager, probably around sixteen or seventeen years old. He had never seen this young man before, which made him nervous. Could I be in the wrong house? Could I have been mistaken? Then he got lucky, and the young man with an astonished look on his face spoke:

George? How did you find us?

Yes, he was lucky, now he was sure it was one of Allan’s kids. In fact, as he stared into his eyes, he knew it was David.

    He grabbed David’s arm.

Call your father, mother and brother down here now! he ordered while pressing the gun to David’s head.

David did what he was told, and, in short order, they were all standing in the living room in front of George as he continued to press the gun to David’s head.

Leave David out of this, George. Your dispute is with me and with me alone. Please, I’ll do whatever you want, implored Allan.

Rachel took a couple of steps forward and added with tears in her eyes, If you still love me, George, please let David go and take me instead.

George hesitated; he hated to see Rachel suffer like this, and it was all Allan’s fault. If Allan hadn’t tricked Rachel into falling in love with him, none of this would be happening.

How did you find us? James asked with a puzzled look on his face.

George then refocused; there was no going back, and his decision was made.

You can thank your friend Wendy. That’s how I found you, responded George with a cynical smile on his face.

What did you do to her? asked James, raising his voice and clinching his fists.

George then swung his gun in the air, getting everybody to step back.

I didn’t touch her, James. I didn’t need to. All I had to do was trace an e-mail she sent you. It gave me your IP address, and that’s all I needed, boasted George. I’ve got to admit, your alien friends did a really good job in disguising you guys. You all look very different, but the longer I stare, the easier it becomes to recognize each and every one of you.

Rachel took yet another step forward. She was probably thinking that it would be easy to reason with him, but it was too late for that now.

Don’t even try it, Rachel. My mind is made up. It’s pointless to do or say anything, George added as he reinforced his position by swinging his gun in the air.

And what are you going to do with us? asked Allan.

George smiled. I’m going to take you and your kids to see some friends of mine. They are very eager to meet you, especially James and David.

You can’t do that, George. They want to use James and David to invade Earth. You can’t let that happen, implored Allan.

Lies! That’s all you’re capable of doing, telling lies. Since the spaceship’s crash in Seattle, since I discovered who you and your kids were, it has all become clear to me. You and your kids are aliens, and, like everyone else with Asperger’s syndrome, you can’t be trusted.

George stood there, waiting for a reaction, and he didn’t have to wait very long. Allan shook his head and took a step in George’s direction.

Please, George, you can’t trust these new friends of yours. Just hear what I have to say, and then you can decide on what to do. But please let me give you all the details first.

Again George felt the need to impose his authority by swinging his gun in the air and getting Allan to step back.

OK, Allan, tell me what you have to say. I’m listening, responded George as though he were humoring him.

As you are aware, the aliens we descend from have been coming to Earth since the dawn of man. They sent breeders to breed and observers to watch, and on three occasions one of their own has come to live among us and influence human evolution. The first visit gave us Newton, the second visit gave us Einstein and the third visit gave us James and David. All this you already know.

Yes, Allan, George said with impatience. I know all this, and I’m beginning to suspect you have nothing relevant to add.

No, please let me finish. Just let me finish.

George was curious and wanted to know what Allan had to say. Besides, seeing Allan in such a desperate position, trying to defend himself, was worth it.

Go ahead. Tell me everything you have to say.

    Allan almost seemed relieved.

"OK, this is what you don’t know, George. Initially this alien species simply wanted to use Homo sapiens to procreate, to save their own species, but then they felt that they couldn’t repeat the same mistakes they had made in the past. They couldn’t jeopardize our evolution; they couldn’t risk our evolving into a violent and aggressive species.

"You see, before they came to Earth, they tried to procreate using another species from another nearby planet. But this process went terribly wrong. The species on that planet became very aggressive and violent, so much so that they started a war. When this violent species found out about planet Earth, they wanted to invade it. Of course, they keep telling their spies and allies from the breeder planet, your so-called friends, that their only interest was to let our species evolve naturally with no external influence, but what they really wanted was to conquer our planet; that’s all they want. That’s all they’ve ever wanted."

George was finding this very amusing, so he gestured for him to go on.

The Kaynakians then created a powerful genetic weapon that prevented the other aliens from invading Earth. This genetic manipulation was passed on from generation to generation, and it prevented them from entering Earth’s atmosphere. If they did so, they would die. Unfortunately, they have now discovered that by manipulating James’ and David’s DNA they could create an antidote. They would be able to enter our atmosphere and eventually conquer Earth.

Allan paused, probably waiting for George to react, but he decided to remain calm and to look as though he were unaffected by all this information. So Allan continued.

That’s why they want to capture James and David. Don’t you see? If they do so, they will destroy our planet.

Allan was trying to reason with him. Probably expecting him to reconsider, to give in, to cling to their past friendship. But his mind was made up, there was no going back, and he had to make Allan see that his decision was already made.

Pathetic, Allan. That’s all I can say. Your desperate attempt to persuade me is pathetic.

Then something unexpected happened. Rachel walked up to him and reached for his gun without saying a word.

He couldn’t believe this was happening. He didn’t want to hurt Rachel, but he couldn’t let her take the gun. He tightened his grip and tried to pull the gun from her reach. He saw Allan reach for the gun. James and David were about to do the same. He had no choice. It was unavoidable. He closed his eyes and pulled the trigger.

When he opened his eyes, Rachel was lying on the ground, and she was bleeding. Allan and his children had immediately knelt next to her, and they were desperately trying to contain the hemorrhaging.

First George felt lost. The love of his life had been taken from him. He had pulled the trigger. It was his fault. Then something inside of him changed. It was no longer his fault. It was Allan’s. Things had led to this point because of Allan.

Look what you made me do! It’s all your fault! screamed George as he aimed his gun at Allan.

He was blind with rage, and as he let all that fury consume him, he took aim, and with his eyes wide open this time, making sure they met Allan’s, he pulled the trigger.

George then stood there staring at Allan’s body, lying on the floor bleeding. As he refocused and tried to decide what to do next, James and David jumped him. They were screaming and punching him hard in the face and in the stomach. With this unexpected reaction from Allan’s kids, he fumbled the gun. He tried desperately to shake James and David off, but it was impossible. He was suffering blow after blow and wasn’t able to escape them. He used his legs and managed to get some leverage, freeing himself from James’ and David’s grasp.

He sprang to his feet and searched for his gun, and as his eyes met Allan’s, he knew exactly what was going to happen next, and there was nothing he could do to prevent it. Allan pulled the trigger, and he fell to the ground.

George was finding it hard to breathe. He tried to get up but couldn’t. Then, as he lay there, he heard Allan speak.

James, David, you must go. You must put Plan B into practice.

We can’t leave you and Mom here, protested James.

There is nothing that you could do for us now. You have to save yourselves. George is no longer a threat, but I’m sure others will come. Please don’t let all of this be in vain. You guys promised. Plan B.

George then heard a car pull up in the driveway.

Run, please run! he heard Allan say.

We love you, Dad. We love you, Mom, James said.

We love you very much, added David.

I know, and I love you guys more than you will ever know. Now, please, go before it’s too late.

George heard James and David head for the back of the house. It was getting harder and harder for him to breathe.

He remembered when they first opened the spaceship’s hatch and what the alien had said to him as it touched his arm, "It is you. Because of you man will fall!" Maybe he did deserve this kind of ending. Maybe it was his fate to die like this. So as he lay there, waiting for the end to come, Cole and Ross rushed in.

Quick, Ross, find the two kids! ordered Cole.

Cole then stood over George, staring at him with those cold, shark-like eyes.

Typical, isn’t it, George? You had to do things your way, and now you’re going to die because of it.

Ross reappeared. I can’t find them anywhere; they’re gone.

    Cole smiled at George.

I guess you got lucky. We can’t let you die. Well, not now anyway. We still need you to locate James and David. Do you hear me, George? You can’t die now.

George then let it all sink in. Rachel was dead, and it was his fault; all of this was his fault. He felt as if his time had come. He didn’t want to carry on; he didn’t want to face the consequences. So, as he lay there, he decided that he wasn’t going to obey Cole’s last order. He decided that his end had come.

    TORONTO, ONTARIO—James

James and David ran as fast as they could. They raced to the far end of the block. Then James grabbed the keys from his pocket and opened the neighbor’s garage. He did it all mechanically; there was no need to think things over. His father had gone through the procedures with them over and over. It was never expected to be put into practice. It was only a precautionary measure. It was just a plan B.

Check the glove compartment, James ordered as they both got in.

The money and mobile phone are here.

Then let’s go. James started the car, and they made their way to the Trans-Canada Highway.

His father had set this plan up in case things went wrong, and things had gone terribly wrong. He had made them keep this plan a secret. Only the four of them knew about it; even Agent Webber was kept in the dark. James always thought his dad exaggerated sometimes, but, then again, there they were.

The plan was simple. His father had rented out a neighbor’s garage and bought a used car from another neighbor. They simply had to take the Trans-Canada Highway all the way to Vancouver. Then they would turn on the mobile phone and redial the last number. That was it, simple and flawless. James guessed that maybe some of Vasco’s techniques had rubbed off on his dad because, as his father used to say, no one would expect them to drive from Toronto to Vancouver. It was a 3,100-mile trip and totally unexpected.

James looked over at David, he was still crying. He too had tears in his eyes, but they had to keep going. His father would want it this way.

They had been on the road for about four hours now, and not a word had been said. James was feeling responsible for what had happened. If it weren’t for him, George would never have found them. It was all his fault, and he was sure David felt the same. Despite his and his brother’s Asperger’s, they would have spoken to each other by now. But he couldn’t face his brother, not after what had happened.

So they continued their journey in silence. James felt like crying, screaming, letting it all out, but his guilt prevented him. He wondered why his brother was so silent; maybe he was only trying to avoid confrontation, trying to contain himself. David had all the right in the world to blame him for what had happened.

Another four hours of silence went by, and James was feeling tired.

We’ve reached Saint Marie. I think we should rest, he said, avoiding eye contact.

He left the main road and entered a Howard Johnson Inn complex. After parking their car, they headed for the reception area.

Good evening, how can I help you? asked an older gentleman wearing large glasses and sitting behind a wooden counter.

We would like a room for the night, James said.

After they filled in the internal form and paid for the room, the receptionist handed them the key.

It’s room 409, and it’s at the end of the hallway.

Thank you, James said as he grabbed the key. David left the reception area, heading for the end of the hall. James quickly followed, and when he caught up with David, he realized that he had stopped in front of room 409.

I’m not sleepy, and I need to go for a walk, said David, avoiding eye contact.

Do you want me to come with you?

No! I prefer to go alone, David said with tears in his eyes.

OK, I understand. Don’t stay up too late, and be careful.

David didn’t even respond. He turned around and left James standing by himself as he walked away.

James entered their room, and as he looked around he realized that they hadn’t redecorated the place since the ‘70s. The curtains and the matching bedspreads were appalling. He let himself fall onto one of the beds and lay there, staring at the ceiling. He was getting nervous; he shouldn’t have let his brother wander off like that, but what could he do? His brother needed to be alone, and he had to respect that. But was he doing the right thing? If his father were here, would he have let his brother wander off like that? The answer was obvious; it was no. He had taken the easy way out, avoiding confrontation.

He got up and headed outside, hoping to see his brother, but all he saw was an empty hallway. He kept his eyes on the nearby road, telling himself that his brother would soon appear. He was now shaking, and he felt a meltdown coming on. He was having difficulties dealing with all these emotions, and then when he felt he couldn’t take it anymore, he saw a bright white light flash in the distance. It was his brother. He was sure it was his brother.

He quickly made his way down the road in the direction of the white light, not really sure what he was going to find and cursing himself for letting his brother wander off like that. After about five minutes, he found himself standing in front of a liquor store.

The first thing he saw was his brother standing to the right of the building near the far end and still radiating white light. Lying on the ground were five men. David was standing there with his arms hanging low and his fists clenched.

    David, what happened?

David turned around with tears in his eyes. I wasn’t able to save Mom and Dad, that’s what happened. Why couldn’t I use my powers on George? Why?

James hugged his brother, and they both stood there, sobbing, letting it all out. James realized that David wasn’t glowing anymore. This was the second time James had witnessed his brother’s unique powers. The first time had been in Russia, where he had used them to save his father. His scream of desperation had unleashed this white energy that had annihilated their aggressors.

Come on, we have to go, James said as he heard sirens from a distance.

They raced back to the hotel, grabbed their stuff, and drove away.

Once they’d been driving for almost an hour, James felt he had to say something.

It’s not your fault, David. If there’s anyone here to blame, it’s me. If it weren’t for me, George would never have found us. I’m the only one to blame.

You don’t understand, said David, keeping his head hung low. You had no way of knowing that Wendy’s e-mail was going to be intercepted. It’s not your fault. It’s my fault. I know how to use and control my powers, but, somehow, I wasn’t able to save Mom and Dad.

You know how to control your powers? James asked in shock.

    David nodded.

But those five men back there, you didn’t kill them? Did you?

No, I didn’t kill them, David said, obviously offended with James’ remark. I knocked them out, and they deserved it too. They were beating this other guy up. I had to do it.

James was relieved; his brother had used his power, but in a good way.

I’m proud of you, David. I really am. And you’re not responsible for what happened, not one bit.

David made an effort to smile. "I wish I could believe you. I still don’t know what really happened. I was trying to
