Sam Austin

Sam Austin is the author of over 25 stories ranging from short horrors to the 136 thousand word fantasy epic 'Damsel Knight.' Her short story 'Second Chance' was awarded an honorable mention in the writers of the future contest. Her favourite genres to play in are fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Most of her works could be considered young adult. Having autism and dyspraxia, she's passionate about including underrepresented characters in her stories. Her novel 'Damsel Knight' features a gender questioning teenager in a fantasy world with very strict gender roles. Roy of the 'Crystal Wolves' series occasionally battles mental health issues alongside solving paranormal crimes. And her upcoming series stars a protagonist who happens to have a severe spinal injury. She's very fond of underdogs, so most of her stories contain characters way over their heads. The sort of guys or girls who are way too stubborn to back down even when they seem to have half of London gunning for them (Truth Seeker), or are surrounded by creatures who could kill them with a flick of the wrist (Crystal Wolves). Listen To Me:

You going to see that new werewolf movie?

The woman turned, her mouth a perfect o of surprise. She raised a hand to her mouth, as though to hide her shock, and for a moment it seemed like she really saw him. He relished that first moment talking to a stranger. They were all shocked, sure, striking up conversation with strangers was something foreign in a city as big as London, but in that first moment they all really saw him.

It was the only time Isaac felt seen as just himself.

Yes, her lips lifted to a polite smile, but those eyes were dulled.

Isaac leaned back against the wall of the cinema building. Crowds passed around them in droves, but none were looking their way, their minds on popcorn or picking good seats. He tilted his head. You don't really want to go, do you?

For a moment he thought, maybe even hoped that nothing would happen. She blushed, eyes moving around the cinema concession stands as if looking for a way out of this awkward conversation, then her green eyes flicked up to his, and he knew he had her.

No, she said, her eyes fixed on his. Then she blinked, and something like clarity came back to her glazed expression. Movies aren't really my thing. I prefer books and games, they feel more involved. And I got a phone call. You know, I don't think I really want to go.

She was already half way there. This was going to be easy.

Why don't I do you a favor and take your ticket off your hands, Isaac said, giving her a great big smile. You could go and do something you'd enjoy more.

She smiled right back, like they were best buds. Sure. Thanks. That would be a big favor.

She handed over the ticket, practically throwing it into his hands. Then something dark and confused came over her expression. I got a phone call. Maybe I should-

Isaac tucked the ticket into the pocket of his trench coat. A twinge of sympathy needled at his heart. He hated feeling like this, like he was doing something wrong. It wasn't like he went around taking things that anyone would really miss.

What you should do sweetheart is walk out of this cinema and enjoy your day, he said, putting enough force into his voice that she snapped her head up to listen. "Forget
