I consider myself to be a young stay at home mom, with two lovely kids, a boy of sixteen and a girl of thirteen years old. My tastes reading wise can change day to day but the most important requirement for it to captivate me, is that the story needs to lure me away from reality. It doesn't matter is the story itself is real or the created world is in a far far away galaxy. Took up writing almost seven years ago, mainly focusing on one huge project. Almost 3/5 done with that one. It's a work in progress. Sometimes the focus is there, sometimes it wanders, but I do my best to get something finished eventually. I'm taking my first few tentative steps with sharing a short story I wrote a long time ago. Who knows if the replies are nice I might submit even more over time.

    Chapter 1:

Darkness surrounded him, a strange smell wafted up his nose. It teased him into investigating where it came from. He tried looking around but the blackness blocked every chance for him to even pin point where he was, where he was going, he simply felt lost.

Closing his eyes, he hoped his other senses would help. His hands stretched out before him, taking one careful step after the other, every now and then moving his arms to the left or right.

The smell was growing stronger and it tickled his memory. He knew that smell, just didn't know what it was, yet.

He stopped abruptly as he could hear some soft jingling bells coming from dead ahead. Tilting his head, he concentrated hard but the bells were all he heard, no footsteps, no bristling of clothes. Moving forward the sound grew louder and suddenly it hit him. He knew that smell; it was incense! He knew of only one person using the stuff and that person hated his guts.

Why am I smelling this? I haven't been near her place for years!

Curiosity joined the confusion at his predicament as he slowly shuffled forward. The sounds grew louder and more and more details started seeping through his consciousness. Yet he still had no frigging clue what the hell was going on, where he was or how he got there. His mind was as blank as the darkness was pitch black.

Thomas, wake the fuck up, you drunken idiot!

He cringed at the sudden yelling and the pokes he got in his side. His arms flayed around him, trying to fight off the woman who was shouting at him.

Don't you try this crap with me! I know you're awake. Get your drunken ass of my porch, you have no business here!

Her tirade continued as he battled to try and get to grips with what was happening. Bit by bit, he managed to open his eyes only to get caught in the fierce red curls his nemesis sported. Curls he always dreamed of burying his face into.

And that is just what he did. As fast as lightning he grabbed the woman hovering over him and pulled her on top of him. He knew this was the only chance he'd ever get to get this close to her for he was sure she would hate his guts even more now, though he still hadn't figured out why she hated him in the first place.

Thomas, release me this instance! she tried pushing against his chest to get up.

"Firstly I'm not drunk, I never drink. If I reek of alcohol it's because one of my mates spilled his drink all over me in his own drunken haze.

"Secondly, I have no idea how I ended up here. It is possible my sugar levels dropped and I needed to get somewhere familiar.

Thirdly, why do you hate me so? For twenty years you hated me while all I wanted to be was your friend.

He let her go just a little bit so he could sit up. Things were starting to come back to him. With his diabetic status he miscalculated for his next shot and he didn't get him in time. Passing her house he must have hoped she would figure out what was going on, he never made his medical condition a secret.

The incense that was always burning just outside her house, made him feel calmer, feel safe, made him belief things would be ok. That's why he most likely succeeded to get up on her porch before passing out. Only he didn't notice any incense burning, he only saw two pots next to her front door. He vaguely remembered that they were called Incense Bush, their fragrance wafting up his nose in full force now.
