    The mouse protruded its quivering mouth just out of the hole, scanning the room for any unfriendly movement. Comforted by the stillness of everything around, it scuttled a little further and stopped again to observe any hostile interest in the little movement.

    At a little distance the cat sat frozen, its tail twitching imperceptibly at the end. Its eyes glued to the mouse, the cat was careful not to make the slightest movement as it knew it would send the mouse scurrying back to the safety of the hole.

    For the mouse the cat was just another inert object, like the table and the chair. It waited for a while, scanned the room again for any possible danger, then its eyes rested on some crumbs of bread lying near the foot of the table. It ventured further, darting fearful glances in all directions. The cat tensed a bit but still did not move, knowing that it was not the right moment to pounce. The
