LONG AGO, A young man named Jaidutt lived in the ancient city of Ujjain in India. His mother and grandmother had brought him up because his father had wasted his inheritance and abandoned the family.
The two women managed as well as they could on the little money they had. But by the time Jaidutt turned eighteen, they had not one paisa left. “We have nothing now,” his grandmother said, tears welling in her eyes. “We have even sold our last piece of jewelry.”
