    Chapter 1

    Training Day

Molly of Mars, don’t kick so hard, my alien sister Pirra whined. She pushed back her sweaty black hair. My arms are aching.

Don’t quit on me, I said through gritted teeth. I need to be faster, stronger, better.

You already are. We’ve been at this beach house for four months, and you’ve done nothing but train.

I looked in the mirror as I rubbed my arms. I was fitter and stronger than ever. Pirra had taken me through warrior training, and I could fight any of them, though she warned me about overconfidence as I was still smaller than a Sephian.

I adjusted the two buns in my strawberry-blond hair and shook my muscles to soothe them. Do you think Vicky is back yet? I asked. I want to talk to her.

She’s here, Vicky said as she walked into the room. Hannu and I just got back. We brought dinner.

Odd, Pirra said. I didn’t hear the skimmer land.

There’s a huge cargo ship on the landing pad, Vicky said. Someone’s moving in or something.

In the off-season? Pirra moved to the window and began inspecting the area behind the house.

What is it? I asked and went to take a look for myself. I don’t see anything.

Pirra continued her scan. It’s probably nothing, but I didn’t expect any ships coming to the beach houses for another two months. It’s too cold here.

Poor Hannu’s had to wear three layers of clothes, Vicky said. Sephians are so sensitive to the cold. They’re supposed to be so tough, but it’s the wimpiest thing I’ve ever seen.

Cold comas aren’t fun, Pirra replied. For every genetic improvement, we sacrificed something. Our cold weakness is the most glaring.

A shuffling sound came from the roof, and Pirra bolted out of the workout room into the hallway.

    We chased after her.

Get ready to go, she hissed at Castor and Hannu in the kitchen.

We just got the food out, Castor replied. Extra crisps.

We shouldn’t have to live like this, Hannu protested. I’m making good money. We can survive using it. The Pekkans can protect us.

"That’s my money and do it!" Vicky ordered.

You want to rely on leaders, I said with revulsion. No power.

This beach house is theirs, Hannu countered. They—

Go! Vicky smacked Hannu on the arm. Someone’s outside.

    What?

They scrambled to their room and started gathering their belongings, Vicky going for our bags. It was part of the escape plan. They’d carry our belongings, and Pirra and I would protect everyone. We were the warriors of the group.

Less than a minute later, everyone huddled together at our assigned escape location.

Remember the plan, I whispered. They breach and we fly out the hole we cut in the wall. We’ll be halfway down the driveway before they know what happened.

Get to the neighbor’s skimmer, Pirra said.

What about ours? Castor asked. I like that one.

    It’s already disabled.

    How do you know?

Because that’s what I would do.

I peeked outside, and what I saw confirmed our fears. Several Sephian centurions waited there. Each was around our age, holding a baton. Five, I said.

That means five in the back and two on the roof, Pirra said. That’s going to be a problem if we have to fight.

Castor and Hannu both caught my eye. Their blue worker eyes looked worried, and I knew they didn’t want to fight. They didn’t even know how to fight. We had tried to teach them, but they didn’t have the stomach for it, at least not for attacking. However, they could defend themselves, and Castor was particularly strong.

I reassured them. Don’t worry, guys, no fighting today.

You can’t promise that, Castor argued. I think you’ll be punching someone in the end.

The shuffling on the roof sounded again. Vicky pulled in tight to Hannu, and I tapped Pirra to get ready, but of course, she already was.

Scratching and rustling at the door focused my concentration on it. I tapped my fingers along my stun gun from Mars. We had this planned, practiced, and ready.

Boom! The door to the beach house blew inward and banged loudly along the floor.

Instantly, Hannu and Castor pushed through the trick wall we had created. Vicky and the boys made it through to the side of the house within seconds.

Pirra went next, and I followed behind. With a quick glance, I made sure the centurions weren’t following, and Pirra slipped the false wall back into place.

By the time I turned, Vicky and Hannu were dashing toward the neighbor’s hangar. Pirra bounded off the porch, and I followed close behind at a full sprint. Castor slowed to allow me to catch up. I was the slowest of the group, and it was nice that he was worried about me.

We were halfway down the walkway leading to the dozen beach houses along the canal when I heard a commotion behind us. I glanced back over my shoulder and saw three centurions chasing us.

Several stun shots whizzed over our heads. I spun around and fired a few shots to slow the centurions. It wasn’t going to be easy to get the skimmer powered and fight them off. The neighbor’s vehicle was fast, but it wasn’t new. It took some care to get working.

Hurry, Molly! Pirra shouted as she, Hannu, and Vicky cut down a path leading to the garage.

Molly, get moving, Vicky screamed. Please!

My butt only moves this fast! I hollered.

Castor yanked on my arm to hurry me. We need to move—

His complaint distracted him, leaving him vulnerable to attack. He screamed and fell to the ground. I skidded to a stop and fired five shots, hitting two of the three boys chasing us. All three scrambled for cover.

My leg, Castor said. I can’t feel it.

Stunner, I said, grabbing him under his arm. Get up.

No. He pushed me back. Just escape. They want you.

I pulled him to his feet. Don’t be so noble. I’d never be able to forget you then.

Maybe that’s the point, he muttered.

I can’t get rid of you, can I?

    Not easily.

I looked up to see the centurions creeping toward us. For the first time, I noticed their uniforms. These centurions dressed like the rangers back in Haven, only they had the warrior’s eye patch on their chest, the symbol for the human war. I didn’t like it because it meant someone was searching specifically for us.

I fired four more shots, pushing back the boys.

    Molly! Pirra shouted. Come!

I pulled Castor to his feet and headed toward a nearby stable. Pirra, get the skimmer powered up. I’ll meet you across the pasture in the grasslands. We’ll take one of the horses.

They aren’t horses, Castor said. Using me as a crutch, he hopped into the stable.

"Horse is easier to say than hevonen."

I pushed open the stable doors and went over to the hevonen that Castor had befriended. He loved these animals. I still remembered our ride back in Haven. A few months ago, he had found them starving on one of his exploration days and had fixed the automatic feeder. They had loved him ever since.

    Get going, I ordered him.

He hopped halfway up, and I pushed his butt the rest of the way. He slipped into the saddle and pulled me up beside him. Spark is ready, he said. Are you?

I’m not waiting for them to catch us. Go!

He tapped Spark on the ribs, and the hevonen flew out of the stable amazingly fast. Within seconds, we were galloping down the pathway into the grasslands along the lake.

I glanced over my shoulder. No one was following us. I saw Pirra’s skimmer clear the neighbor’s hangar and zip along the water toward our rendezvous. The others had made it. It was up to us.

Faster! I said. I don’t want them waiting for us.

Spark can only go so fast . She’s a good girl with a big butt.

    I understand.

A rumble came through the trees, and several large wolves tore in from either side. I fired a shot into the front paw of the closest one. It stumbled enough for Spark to race past them all. We had the lead, but the wolves weren’t faltering.

What’s on their heads? Castor asked.

I looked back. I don’t know. Some kind of mind-control device or a camera or both.

Centurion wolves, he said. Someone’s controlling them. We had a pair in my city after the war, and I couldn’t go into the desert without them hounding me.

I leaned backward and twisted around. The wolves were coming quickly, and they were big, too, several feet taller than Spark.

Snorting and growling, they pursued us relentlessly. Spark twisted around a rock formation, darted through a narrow pass, and sprang over a lagoon. The wolves snapped their jaws at our feet.

I pushed as close to Castor and Spark as I could. Spark’s hevonen breaths were deep and intense, and I couldn’t help but focus on the truly exceptional mare.

With long strides, Spark galloped up a grassy embankment. That was when we made our first mistake. When a wolf cut us off, Spark skidded to a stop, and I flipped over the top of her head to the ground below, hitting my tailbone hard.

I tried to get up, but my rubbery legs wouldn’t hold me.

A snout pushed me against the ground. I fought the wolf off with my hand as it snarled in my face, its teeth dripping with saliva. I stared directly into the camera on top of its head. The beast was just waiting for the command to kill me.

    Chapter 2

    Alien in Wolf’s Clothing

    Molly, get up, Castor ordered.

My eyes were fixated on the long fangs in front of me. I’ve got a problem, in case you didn’t notice.

Don’t move! he said next. The controllers of the wolves don’t want you hurt.

We can’t let them capture me, I said hotly.
