One Duck Opening

WITH LESS than a week to go before the start of the Victorian Duck Season it was time to get moving. I had already made up my mind as to where I was going to put the opening in as I had been hunting foxes in the area over the last few months and had kept an eye on the duck population in the area.

With all the billabongs holding good levels of water the ducks had bred up in good numbers, but that was then; now the billabongs were evaporating at a constant rate due to the continuous dry weather we were experiencing. Needless to say the ducks were on the move, all except the few hundred teal that were camped on the Big Reedy.

Even though the water was only ankle deep the teal were staying put. It would have been a good spot to put opening in, but I am not one for crowds and there was no doubt there would be a few hunters turning up.

I have hunted these billabongs all my life and although the ducks weren’t there at the moment I knew
