Pigeon pair downs ducks
By the time duck opening was with us, I had pretty much everything under control and was ready for a busy season. By all accounts, if conditions held, it was going to be a good one and, possibly, for the next few years as well. I have a nice quiet little spot tucked away in the bush that very few know of, even locals, and I have been patronising this location for a number of years.
The tail end of a long billabong, it is favoured by most species of legal game birds and the perfect space to put out a few decoys and work the dog over. However, this year, as with a lot of other places, we had received plenty of rain during the winter months, with the result that all the billabongs were filled to capacity and water levels were still higher than usual at this time of year. So, this meant that all the decoys’ strings had to be lengthened and as soon as I had emptied the decoys out of the carrying bag and onto the shed floor, my Murray River retriever was immediately at my side with her tail wagging. “Yes, Missy,” I said, “it’s time
