Suzanne gave Mr. Weaver an uncertain smile and stepped in through the door. The office, like all doctors' offices, was harsh and white, filled with the smell of cleaner. Suzanne couldn't help but wrinkle her nose as Mr. Weaver led her down the hallway, past nurses and other patients.

You said this wasn't going to take long? Suzanne asked.

No, of course not. You did take those pills I gave you?

Yes. The painkillers that he had given her when Suzanne was there last with her husband. They were to help alleviate some of the pain during the procedure.

The procedure. The procedure that was going to get her pregnant. She and her husband were completely and utterly in love with each other, and the last way they knew to really prove it to each other was to have a child together. But, alas, after years of trying no child had come of it. Finally they went in to get themselves tested, and it turned out that her dear husband had weak swimmers. They could still get pregnant, but they would need all the help they could get.

They were very happy to hear about this new procedure, and even more ecstatic to learn that there was a local doctor who knew about the technique and was willing to perform it on them, Mr. Weaver. Mr. Weaver was a very agreeable man, and explained to them the complication rates (very low) and the chance of conception (very high).

But even with all his encouragement, Suzanne couldn't stop her hands from shaking and clinging to her purse as Mr. Weaver led her down the hall. She really wanted her husband to be there, but he couldn't get off work that day. She had to go through the procedure alone. It was better if she was alone, Mr. Weaver had told her, with kindness and concern in his eyes. Sometimes the procedure seems...extreme to onlookers, despite not being all that dangerous. Suzanne wrung out her purse straps. He could say that all he wanted, but Suzanne couldn't help but assume the worst.

Mr. Weaver led her into an examination room and asked that she stripped down and slip into the gown. With a smile he left the room.

Suzanne nervously put down her purse and kicked off her shoes. She could feel how cold the floor was through her thick socks. The cool air of the room pierced through her skin as she removed her clothes and slipped on the gown. Self-consciously she tried to pull it closed over her chest, but, as always, it wouldn't make it all the way around.

Suzanne slid up onto the table and swallowed nervously. At least she could imagine that her husband was there with her. She wrapped her hands around each other and pretended that one of them was his.

Within several minutes Mr. Weaver knocked on the door and let himself in.

All comfortable, are we? he asked, flashing that smile again. In any other situation, the smile would have been comforting, but there was something about right now that made it send unpleasant shivers down her spine. Suddenly she started to doubt his kindness and generosity.

He put a hand on her shoulder
