    Rita Brown draws upon the account of her youth and her emergence as a lesbian author. Rubyfruit Jungle is a coming-of-age autobiographical novel.

    The title itself is a quite controversial according to some critics because ‘Rubyfruit jungle’ is a slang term for the female sex organs, the genitals.

    It is a coming-of-age story that describes her development as an aspiring artist and a lesbian woman in the middle of the 20th century. There is no doubt that it is a book of its time.

    Rita Mae Brown, the author of the novel, was brought up in the segregated South between 1950s and 1960s. She was unable to get personal and professional freedom owing the widespread prejudice in the society in that part of the world.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    Molly Bolt, the narrator and protagonist of the novel, is similar to Rita Mae Brown. The author is also a lesbian. She was born in southern Pennsylvania. In her adolescence, she moved to Florida.

    Having gone through the novel, it becomes obvious that Molly Bolt is in several ways the fictional version of the author. She has many traits of the author’s own life.

    It is noticeable that both Rita Mae Brown and Molly Bolt, the protagonist of the novel, are adopted as infants. They are teased and called
