Sexy, fun read! It was nice to read about a woman with a career and goals of her own. Loved the ancient Egypt theme and can't wait for Book 2!

Unearthed: Taken by the Rogue

by Cherri Velvet

I removed the white gloves that contrasted nicely with my hot cocoa skin and rubbed my tired eyes. I looked remorsefully over at my notepad, empty except for a few words I had been able to translate. The scroll in front of me was in terrible shape, and as the junior Egyptologist at the Museum of Natural History, the task of slogging through the translations fell squarely in my lap. The head Egyptologist was my mentor, Dr. Thelonious Bateman, had been giving my more difficult pieces to catalogue and translate lately to challenge me. A good mentor pushed you to be better, and Theo was pushing me to be my best. I sighed and stood, my back cracking in grateful relief.

I glanced at the clock, and then stared at it, hard, giving my eyes a minute to focus. My stomach rumbled and confirmed what I was seeing. It was 8 pm, and I had missed dinner - again. Most twenty-six-year-olds had no desire to spend their Friday nights poring over page after page of ancient Egyptian parchment, but I loved it. I loved everything about ancient Egypt, ever since my geologist father took my family along on a business trip to Egypt. Little did I know that trip would start an obsession that would lead me to grad school. Maybe it was my black heritage that led me to Egypt, but whatever it was, the pull to the ancient culture was strong.

My stomach rumbled again and I took one last look at the parchment and the fading hieroglyphics before placing it back in the protective glass. I pocketed my name badge and smartphone into my curve-hugging jeans and removed the shapeless white lab coat. My stomach growled again. Yeah, yeah, I hear ya, I said, yawning. I walked to the door that resembled an airlock door on a futuristic spaceship and punched in my code to start the cycle. With all the artefacts we had in our collection, the airlock and the air system kept the artefact room at a constant temperature and humidity. All it would take is a typical muggy D.C. day for half the papyrus scrolls to crumble to dust.

The airlock cycled and I stepped out, prepared to head home. For the thousandth time I wondered if the political turmoil would ever die down in Egypt so that I could return to the land of sandalwood scents and desert dunes. More than anything I itched to do real, hands-on field work and to get out of the sterility of a lab. I had only worked on a few smaller digs; nothing like the great tombs that Theo had unearthed in his younger days. Field work was a luxury these days.

I scanned my badge with my name in big, block letters - Zaria Bell - and then waited while the door closed behind me and for the familiar cycle of the airlock to complete to ensure the room was secure. I fiddled with the hole in the sleeve of my sweater, and sighed. Egypt was just a pipedream these days; being a grad student in one of the most expensive cities in the world left me little money for necessities, let alone being able to take a trip. Even if Egypt was off limits right now, there were archaeological digs going on in Greece and Turkey. I laughed to myself, knowing that I would love the travel, but they didn't hold the same pull that Egypt had on me I walked up the stairs to the small room that doubled as the cafeteria and pulled the packet of instant ramen out of my shabby purse. If I was going to make the hour train ride home bearable I needed to eat something. My mind wandered to the scroll that I had been examining as I prepared my meager, salty dinner. The papyrus was threadbare and incredibly delicate, but I was having a more difficult time than usual translating the hieroglyphics. The hieroglyphics looked rooted in ancient Egyptian, but there were still translations that didn't match up. Maybe I just needed a break to let my brain work on it.

The microwave dinged and I sat down with my steaming bowl, blowing my breath over hot ramen. The ramen was a point of pride with me. Just a few months ago, my Friday nights would have involved changing into an expensive couture gown and spent half an hour putting on makeup in the restroom, and been taken out for a night on the town by Michael Donovan, my
