    Finding Freedom: Winds of Change

    Chapter 1: Old Enemies

It was Christmas Eve and I was taking a walk in the snow.

The snow wasn't very heavy, just light sprinkles here and there; they were mostly drifting through the sky instead of sticking the ground or sticking to me. They would drift right off as if they had a deeper agenda.

It was well past nightfall, and the streetlights reflected off the snowflakes, making them shine and glitter. It was pleasant, calm, and I wished I was anywhere else other than there at the moment.

I wished I was in a house—my own house, not my passed mother's house, a house that I had bought and was properly and entirely my own—my own house with a fireplace and the electricity turned on. And Danielle would be there, I'd be cuddled up to her in front of the fireplace, which would have a roaring fire. I'd be drinking hot coca, and Danielle did what Danielle did. By that point, I wasn't sure she ever drank anything other than tea, or ate anything but apples.

But Danielle wasn't here. Even though she was the reason I was out after dark on Christmas Eve, I wasn't visiting her. I didn't have my own house, and I didn't have a fireplace, and I didn't have Danielle.

Danielle's a vampire, and she'd been kidnapped. The gang who kidnapped her regularly prostituted out vampires like Danielle to high-paying men in exchange for protection from humans and other vampires. But Danielle didn't need protection this time around, so they just kidnapped her. It made me furious on a level I couldn't even understand; I couldn't even imagine the kind of things that they were making her do, so I tried to not think about it as much as possible.

Danielle's life is complicated, since that gang wasn't the only people looking for her. She also had her old group, the group that she was a part of before she came to my town. While she was with her old group, she told a human that she was a vampire and, well, that didn't go over too well. She escaped for her own non-life, but her old group stalked her here and left her threatening notes and then blew up my apartment building in order to get back at her.

It wasn't very nice of them.

I stopped at the intersection and looked over the envelope in my hands. It was made of chemically yellowed paper, that I could tell. There was a single letter on the front: M. It was the same sort of letter that Danielle got from her old group, but this one had directions instead of threats.

Muller and Trayson, 7:00pm, Christmas Eve

My phone rang. It was my sister.

    Hello?

There's a small group approaching. Three. You still have that knife I gave you?

I could feel its weight in my coat. A silver knife. It was strangely quaint, but apparently still effective.

Yeah. It's not like I'd drop it between then and now.

    Katrina grunted in annoyance.

Katrina, my older sister who left me and my mother before I entered high school, is part of a vampire tracking group. Katrina never really struck me as
