Pirate Booty - Aunt Tillie
Chapter 1
I WAS OUT OF BREATH but I’d made it. Once again the Baptists had beaten the Catholics to Francine’s Cafe after church, and once again the Catholics would get to watch the Baptists eat banana pudding for dessert.
Francine greeted me at the door. I guess you’ll be having the usual,
she said.
I nodded and took a seat while seventeen more worshipers from Pastor Don’s congregation filed in behind me and took a seat at the winner’s table. Ida Belle sat on one side of me and Gertie grabbed the seat on my other side. Some of the Catholics peered in through the window from the sidewalk and then turned and walked away.
They’re so petty,
said Francine. They’d rather go home and cook than have to sit in here and watch.
To the victor belong the spoils,
I said. Well, I hope the pudding isn’t spoiled. I mean, that’s just a figure of speech, right? You know what I mean.
Francine smiled and nodded.
Hey,
I continued. Where’s Ally?
Ally was my friend and sometimes roommate who waited tables at Francine’s.
She’s gone to New Orleans to visit her mother. And while she’s there, she thought she might just drop in and see Celia. Sunday is visitors day at Celia’s place, you know... from one to three p.m.
I smiled. Ally’s mother was in an extended care facility due to medical issues and Celia was Ally’s cray-cray aunt who was doing time in prison for voter fraud. Both were currently housed in New Orleans, so that meant Ally could visit both relatives with one trip.
Makes sense. Kill two birds with one stone and save on gas and travel time.
Yes,
said Francine. She leaned in close and whispered: Ally’s pinching pennies this month, so you girls might want to think about upping your tips for the next few weeks.
I nodded. Of course. Anything for a friend.
Francine finished pouring water and came back to the table carrying a vase full of flowers. Here Ida Belle, these came for you yesterday. I didn’t know what to do with them, so I’ve had them sitting by the cash register. I think they pretty the place up.
Ida Belle snatched the card from the flowers and yanked it out of the envelope. She read it silently while several ladies from the church peeked over her shoulder.
From a secret admirer,
Mavis read aloud. Ida Belle turned and glared at her, then tore the card into pieces.
Francine, you can put these back by the cash register. This is some kind of mistake.
Whispers went around the table as Francine carried the vase away. I know what you’re all thinking,
Ida Belle said out loud, but you’re wrong.
The whispering continued and didn’t stop until the bell over Francine’s front door jingled.
Carter LeBlanc walked in and all eyes flicked from Ida Belle to Carter to me. Carter was the hot Deputy who had developed a crush on me, and I kind of had a crush on him too. He talked to Francine for a moment then stepped to our table where I was embroiled in conversation with the SLS members. We were laughing, gossiping and cracking jokes.
He raised an eyebrow to catch my attention and motioned me away from the table. I excused myself and joined him in the corner for a moment. You know,
he said, when you first came here a few weeks ago, you were so different from anyone else in the town of Sinful. Now, you’re talking like them and acting like them, and...
That hurt in a way, because I knew one of the reasons he liked me was because I was different.
Does this change our relationship?
I asked.
He shook his head. No. But I’m just saying... you’ve become one of them.
Before I could make a remark, Francine came over and jabbed a couple of sack lunches into his hand and he excused himself.
Walter...fishing,
he said as he turned and walked away. No goodbye kiss, no shaking hands, no hugs, nothing. I knew that Sunday afternoons were reserved for the men’s private fishing trips, so I didn’t find his quick exit to be a serious cause for concern. I turned around and walked toward the quiet stares coming from the Baptist’s table, found my seat and sat back down.
The dead silence soon turned into a buzz as the ladies got busy talking about Frankie’s new car, who had the biggest tomatoes, who was sinning with who, who had what disease and a host of other Sunday business. Carter’s curt dismissal and Ida Belle’s secret admirer, like today’s sermon, were soon forgotten.
Chapter 2
NOTHING MUCH SURPRISED me any more, but I was certainly surprised when I opened the front door on Monday morning.
Let me in. I need to change clothes, on account of this wool outfit is killing me.
Ida Belle brushed past me and into the living room. Is your air conditioning working, ‘cause I’m still kind of hot.
What in the world...
I began, but Ida Belle held her palm up and shut me off.
It’s a pirate costume. I picked it up at an estate sale over on the far side of town. This here’s a real doozy, but Lord, this thing is hot!
With a sword extended in front of her, she made a few lunges across the room, then turned and bounded toward the kitchen, the sword aimed directly at Merlin. Merlin scrambled and dashed up the stairs. Ain’t I a genuine swashbuckler? This here’s a top-of-the-line model and I can’t wait ‘till the next SLS costume party. I’ll be a big hit.
The SLS was the Sinful Ladies Society, a local group of gray-haired widows and old maids whose rules forbade any relationships with men, ‘cause men tended to cloud a lady’s thinking. There were age limits on membership and I didn’t qualify. But Ida belle did, and she was not only one of the founding members, she was their fearless leader.
Ida Belle removed a Napoleon-styled bi-corn hat, an eye patch, a long sleeved shirt of blue, and a pair of dusty white breeches. Underneath all that, she had on jeans and a shirt. She had already tossed the sword-in-a-scabbard and a round tube made of wood and brass onto the floor.
Is it Halloween already?
I asked.
"No. I just thought it looked like a bargain. And this is an old costume, too. It’s not that cheap rayon stuff you get nowdays, this costume’s made to last. Oh, and there’s more out in the car."
I studied the clothes scattered about on my floor. More costume?
No. More stuff! I got myself a big map. Someone mounted it in a picture frame, but I’m sure it goes with all this.
She spread her arms wide. Back in the old days, people went all-out for special events. Take this telescope for example...
She grabbed the tube off the floor and unscrewed one end of it, tilted it up, and a brass telescope slid out into her hands. That’s part of the costume. Doesn’t that look authentic to you?
I nodded. It did look authentic. Ida Belle sat the telescope on an end table and bent down for the sword.
And you haven’t even seen the sword up close yet. Here. Hold this.
Ida Belle thrust the end of the scabbard toward me and I grabbed
