CHAPTER 1
WHAT IS PRIVATE SECURITY?
private police label applied by Kakalik and Wildhorn (1971b). Bottom and Kostanoski (1983) stated that private security provides protection against not only crime but also four additional threats: waste, accident, error, and unethical practice.
According to Wikipedia, Private security companies are defined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as companies primarily engaged in providing guard and patrol services, such as bodyguard, guard dog, parking security and security guard services.
The private security industry is rapidly growing, currently there are 2 million full-time security workers in the United States and this number is expected to increase by 21% percent through 2020. Making the security industry a $100 billion a year industry, with projected growth to $200 billion by 2020. Employees of private security companies are generally referred to either as security guards
or security officers
, depending on the laws of the state or country they operate in. Security companies themselves are sometimes referred to as security contractors
, but this is not common due to confusion with private military contractors, who operate under a different auspice. Ensuring the physical security of your company, business or store site is as important as protecting the security of your network, computers, information and your company’s other intangible assets.
This is why hiring security personnel such as security guards could help you make sure that your business operations are always running smoothly and efficiently. Fortunately, because of the increase in demand for security personnel, there are plenty of security guard companies today that can provide you with exactly what you need. Here are a couple of pointers that can help you select which company to work with.
The first thing that you need to do would be to check the accreditations or the licenses of the security guard companies that you come across with to make sure that they have the proper credentials and permits to operate. Doing this would also help you avoid having to deal with hassles later on if you hire security personnel who cause problems for your company. You should also check if the security guard company can provide sufficient insurance coverage for your business. If you have an insurance advisor, you could have him or her run through the coverage offered by the company.
As you interview security personnel from the security guard company, you might want to have a list of all the questions that you would be asking each of them. Make sure that they are not only hospitable and presentable but also have the capacity of always being aware and alert on the activities that are happening in your company or establishment. Make sure to conduct a background or profile check on each of the applicants. You could also check if they have experience on securing an establishment or a company that is similar to yours.
When going through your options for a security guard company that would provide you with your security personnel, try to search some reviews and testimonials online on each one of them. That way, you would be able to find out how long they have been in the business and if they have a good reputation and if they actually deliver. It is important not to rush the process
