Part I: Introduction
What this book is about
My chief goal in writing this book and the others in the series was to create a practical low-cost resource on safe and effective alternative treatments of mental health problems including herbals, vitamins and other natural supplements, mind-body approaches, and energy therapies.
The subject of this book is schizophrenia. You will learn about a variety of alternative treatments of schizophrenia. If you are currently experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia such as paranoia, auditory or visual hallucinations or delusional thinking, taking a medication that isn’t helping, experiencing side effects, this book provides information about non-medications treatments of schizophrenia and practical strategies for how to use them.
If you’ve struggled with symptoms of schizophrenia in the past and are functioning better now, this book will help you create a wellness plan that fits your lifestyle and your budget. By the time you finish reading you’ll be able to create an individualized care plan adapted to your needs, preferences and budget. Just as important, you will know how to think about your mental health in a more holistic way.
How to use this book
This book was written to give you the maximum amount of information in the least amount of time. The last section of the book is a summary of the most important points. I’ve provided links to valuable internet resources to help you find quality brands of natural supplements and other alternative treatments, important safety information and professional help if you think you need it.
If you are a mental health provider this book contains concise, jargon-free summaries of scientifically validated alternative treatments you can use when advising clients about safe, effective approaches for treating schizophrenia.
Alternative and integrative medicine defined
Alternative medicine—sometimes called ‘complementary and alternative medicine or CAM—consists of approaches that are currently not used in mainstream Western medicine (also called ‘biomedicine’ and ‘allopathic medicine’). Examples of CAM include acupuncture, herbs and other natural supplements, so-called ‘energy’
