Vampires on Campus - Susan G. Charles
Prologue
SOMETHING JUST DIDN’T feel right to Stephen. Something about the campus was off. The campus just didn’t have the comfortable feel that he was accustomed to. He couldn’t put his finger on what it was, but something was wrong. Winter had begun to release its icy grip and what should have been a time of student revelry and big frat parties was instead like a dreary scene from a low budget horror movie. Students wandering around aimlessly their dead eyes staring straight ahead. Too much studying? Too much caffeine perhaps? Stephen wasn’t sure, but to him the majority of the student body looked like members of some kind of religious cult that was about to commit mass suicide.
Then there were all of the familiar faces that seemed to be absent. Well known classmates and friends that we suddenly MIA. There were rumors around campus about a rash of deaths at Northwestern. Some said the deaths were attributed to some exotic disease brought back from a partying spring breaker, but one could never tell.
Thank God for his haven. Elizabeth’s apartment. Stephen liked his place, but Elizabeth’s was much better. Because she was there. They had been dating for a little more than three months and fro the most part of that time he had spent more waking hours at her place than he did at his own. Her place was comfortable. It felt more like home than any place he had been since he left his own a few years ago. He promised himself early in the relationship that he wasn’t going to screw this one up, but then again one can never tell can he?
Chapter 1
STEPHEN ABSOLUTELY loved Tuesday nights at the University hall and it was there that he first laid eyes on Elizabeth Wallace just over a few months ago at the Northwester University College Democrats meeting. She was in her freshman year of doing a fairly liberal arts program. A double major. Poli Sci and History.
She walked in just as the meeting was beginning and took the chair next to him. As soon as he looked at her, he was smitten. No. Thunderstruck. He usually went for red heads, but this blonde with deep blue eyes transfixed him in a way he didn’t know was possible. He had never before seen that hue of blue. She smelled like sunshine after a long summer rain. Man, I hope she’s a bitch. If she is it will make it a whole lot easier when she rejects me.
But Elizabeth was the furthest thing from a bitch. He found that out when she politely asked him for a pencil so she could take down the minutes of the meeting. When their hands touched he could feel the electricity between them. She was wonderful just to be around. Funny, charming, witty and intelligent. She was the whole package and more. On top of all that she was stunning to boot. It took him three weeks to screw up the courage to ask her out for coffee after a meeting. She smiled at him, said yes and it began.
For Elizabeth the handsome, rugged senior was the only thing that she saw when she entered the meeting hall that night. She was happy to see the empty chair next to him and it was all she could do to keep herself from running to grab the seat before someone else did. She waited patiently during the three weeks it took him to finally ask her out and in her mind she played fortuneteller. She would lapse into a dreamlike state and imagine what it would be like if all went according to plan. Her biggest concern, of course, was to tell him about her ‘secret condition’. It would not take him long to realize that she was different and he would have to be told at some point.
Magnus would not be happy, but she could deal with that particular ball of crap when the time came as she had so many times before in the last years. She wondered what Stephen would make of it all. Would he accept it, ask questions, quietly ignore it or run fast and far as any sane man should? Over the years Elizabeth had learnt many things and one of them was men did not run away from her, they ran toward her. She worked hard in school and enjoyed her courses more than most, but more than that she found herself wanting to impress him and please him. He encouraged her and gave her his full support in her academic endeavors as she did him.
They spent many nights in the first three months of their relationship together in the Deering Library. The two of them became a common sight amongst the books and computers ever on the weekends. Her hard work paid off and she was elected to the College Democrat’s board of directors. That evening they went out and celebrated at the local bar. Stephen was normally very laid back, but she soon found that once he had a couple of shots in him he became a completely different person. He became a wild man.
They partied hard into the night and as they were walking home together he kissed her goodnight under her porch light. She melted into his kiss and the stayed together for along time, enjoying the feel of each others bodies. When they pulled apart, she was flushed and excited like she hadn’t been in years. As she looked at the MBA student before her that would someday make Wall Street his bitch she found that she was developing strong feelings for him. On a whim she invited him up, but he declined. He was drunk, but not drunk enough to throw away a good thing for a night of wild sex. He wanted to get to know her first, so with a tip of his imaginary hat he walked off into the night with a slight weaving.
On this particular Tuesday night, they had arranged to meet on the steps of the library and go for a quick bite at a small local diner before the Democrat’s meeting. Stephen was rushing across campus because he was late and he hated being late. It made him feel like a failure. Especially when he was meeting Elizabeth.
As he crossed the Deering Meadow at a run, his mind was more focused on the evening ahead that what was in front of him. His foot hit something solid and he landed face first on the freshly mowed lawn. He let out a yelp of surprise as he tried to catch himself, but he still hit his head on the freshly mown turf. He slowly got to his feet and wiped the wet grass from his face and shirt. There was some foot traffic, but no one seemed to be paying attention to him. Looking around he saw what he had tripped over. A dead dog. The dog’s tongue hung limply out of its mouth. One of its eyes was glazed over and staring straight up at the night sky. Around its head a pool of something that looked like blood was beginning to congeal. He reached down and touched the blood. It was gooey to the touch. Raising it to his nose, he gave it a whiff and assured himself that it was blood alright. No one seemed to have noticed the
