    Chapter 1: Introduction

It’s important to gather as much information as possible before you take the plunge to share your home with a furry friend.

The Ultimate Havanese Dog Manual will answer the questions you may have when researching this toy-sized purebred white-coated canine. If you are considering sharing your home with the active and lively Havanese, this Manual is for you.

Learn all about this intelligent, non-shedding, affectionate canine that is a member of the Bichon family of canines, including facts and secrets, and how to care for every stage of the Havanese’s life.

This book contains all the information you need, from choosing a breeder and finding the perfect puppy to how to care for an aging dog.

As well, you will learn about transitioning through house breaking, adolescence, daily care, health problem inherent in the breed, feeding, grooming, training, first commands and beginner hand signals as well as end of life, so that you can make an educated decision when deciding whether or not the playful and cuddly Havanese is the breed for you and your family.

As well, this manual contains valuable information, tips and tricks that can easily be applied to any breed of canine.

    Chapter 2: The Havanese

The Havanese is a double-coated, non-shedding, small purebred canine that is a member of the Toy and Companion categories.

The lively and playful Havanese has a square configuration, which means that the body is as long as it is tall.

The appearance and size of the Havanese will largely depend upon the appearance and size of both parents.

The Havanese will be friendly high-energy dog that will love to run and play and will excel at whatever activity their guardian has the time to teach, such as advanced Obedience or even Agility.

This small canine with the clownish antics will often burst into a game of chase for no apparent reason other than the shear joy of it, where they will tear about the home like the very devil is chasing them. This game of imaginary chase usually is short lived, ending almost as quickly as it began.

The Havanese is a small dog that likes to be busy doing something, especially if it involves shredding paper. No need to buy an expensive electric shredder, just give the paper to your Havanese and they will quickly reduce it to pieces so tiny even the vacuum will have difficulty picking them up.

    1. Havanese

The sweet, intelligent and mischievous Havanese is an entertaining and highly people oriented small canine that believes everyone they meet is a friend, whether human or otherwise. This is a dog that will bond closely with their human companions.

This is also a dog that quickly learns how to con humans and will soon learn to get its own way if you do not provide firm rules and boundaries.

The Havanese generally stands between 9 and 10.5 inches (23 and 27 centimeters) and will usually weigh between 10 and 16 pounds (4.5 grams and 7.3 kilograms).

Perhaps the most endearing features of the Havanese are their puppy-like expressions, playful temperaments and their characteristic way of cocking their heads to one side when you talk to them.

Statistics indicate that according to American Kennel Club registrations, the Havanese continues to grow in popularity and currently holds the 25th position out of 175 registered breeds.

    2. History/Origin of the Havanese

The toy-sized Havanese is a member of the Bichon family of dogs, which is a family of longhaired, non-sporting dogs that share similar traits, such as a curled tail, dropped ears and short muzzle.

Other dogs in the Bichon family include the Bolognese, the Bolonka, the Coton de Tulear, the Frisé, and the Maltese. Some believe that the Lowchen (called Little Lion Dog) is also part of the Bichon family of canines.

The Havanese is an ancient breed of canine, named after the Cuban city of Havana, which shares its genetic heritage with other old-world Bichon types of small companion dogs that originated in the Mediterranean region during pre-Christian times.

The Havanese breed has been around since the 1500’s, during the time when the Spanish brought their dogs with them when they claimed what we now know as Cuba.

Over the course of many centuries, interesting variations between these dogs took place, which separated them into distinct breeds, each with a slightly different appearance and temperament.

These small dogs were considered a luxury item of the upper class and during the Cuban Revolution the breed was almost totally destroyed. However, when the upper class fled from Cuba to the United States and Europe, they took their Havanese dogs with them.

The Havanese is quite a recent addition to the American Kennel Club registry, having been added as a recognized breed just 18 years ago, in the year 1996.

    3. Havanese Secrets

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba.

The Havanese loves to shred paper.

This purebred canine has been known by many names over the course of their history as a treasured companion, including Havanese Silk Dog, Havanese Cuban Bichon, Youcef Sorry, Bichon Havanese, Havaneser, Havanezer, and Bichon Habanero.

The Havanese likes to be up high and prefers to sit on the back of couches or even on the top of tables (if permitted).

A few amous individuals that have chosen to share their lives with the popular Havanese include:

Cha Cha Cha, owned by US broadcast journalist, Barbara Walters

Harold, owned by tennis player, Venus Williams

Monty, owned by English fashion model, Daisy Lowe

Simon, owned by US comedian, Daniel Tosh

Please understand that much of the content written in this book can be applied to EVERY dog, because when it comes right down to it, a dog is a dog no matter what size, shape, colour, price tag or fancy hybrid name we humans might attribute to them.

Every dog has a uniquely wonderful set of gifts to share with their human counterparts, if only us humans would listen.

They tell us when they are unhappy, when they are bored, when they are under-exercised, yet often we do not pay attention, or we just think they are being badly behaved.

Many humans today are deciding to have dogs, instead of children, and then attempting to manipulate their dogs into being small (or large) fur children. This is having a seriously detrimental effect upon the health and behaviour of our canine companions.

In order to be the best guardians for our dogs, we humans need to have a better understanding of what our dogs need from us, rather than what we need from them, so that they can live in safety and harmony within our human environment.

Sadly, many of us humans are not well equipped to give our dogs what they really need and that is why there are so many homeless, abandoned and frustrated dogs.

As a professional dog whisperer who is challenged with the task of finding amicable solutions for canine/human relationships that have gone bad, once the humans understand what needs to be changed, almost every stressful canine/human relationship can be turned into a happy, forever after.

The sad part is that many humans are simply not willing to do the work and devote the time necessary to ensuring that their dog’s needs are met.

Almost all canine problems are a direct result of ignorance or unwillingness on the part of the canine guardian to learn what the dog truly needs. Forget about the breed for the moment, because what the dog needs to be a happy and well-balanced family member has nothing to do with size, shape, colour or breed.

First and foremost, our dogs need to be respected for their unique canine qualities.

For millennia, dog has been considered Man’s best friend, and in today’s society, when we want to do the best by our canine companions and create a harmonious relationship, we humans need to spend more time receiving the proper training so that we humans can learn how Man can be dog’s best friend.

A Havanese is a dog and therefore can be Man’s best friend providing that the human guardian gains the knowledge they need in order to create a happy environment for the dog.

That’s the biggest secret because if the human treats the dog well and understands what the dog needs, the dog will be happy and the owner will be happy. This is a universal truth that applies to any dog, whether a Havanese or any other breed.

For example, it is not possible to write a book specifically about How to train a Havanese or specifically about what The first few days with your Havanese will entail, etc., as while basic training techniques apply to every dog, every dog and every human/dog relationship will be unique.

For this reason, when referring to daily feeding, care, house training, behavioural training, socializing, etc., these chapters are not written to apply specifically to the Havanese breed, as this information can be applied equally successfully to any dog.

What we humans need to remember is that it is absolutely true that With the proper training, Man can learn to be dog’s best friend.

    Chapter 3: Breeding

    1. Locating a Reputable Breeder

NOTE: this chapter is not about how to breed the Havanese, rather it is all about how to care for each stage of the dog’s life.

Although a good breeder cannot guarantee the lifelong health of any puppy, they should easily be able to provide a prospective Havanese guardian with plenty of information about the health of the puppy’s parents. Prospective guardians should definitely ask the breeder what sort of health tests have been carried out on the parents of a puppy they may be considering purchasing.

For instance, a reputable breeder will have had their breeding dogs tested for hip, thyroid, eye or other problems inherent in the breed and prospective puppy purchasers should always inquire about possible congenital problems the parents or grandparents of the puppy might have, including any premature deaths.

    2. Meet the Parents

Meeting the mother and father of your new Havanese puppy can tell you a great deal about what the temperament and demeanor of your puppy will likely be when they grow into adulthood.

The Havanese puppy’s personality or temperament will be a combination of what they experience in the early days of their environment when they are in the breeder’s care, and the genes inherited from both parents.

Visiting the breeder several times, observing the parents, interacting with the puppies and asking plenty of questions will help you to get a true feeling for the sincerity of the breeder.

The early environment provided by the breeder and the parents of the puppies can have a formative impact on how well your puppy will ultimately behave as an adult dog.

    3. Questions to Ask a Breeder

Get to know your breeder by asking them why they decided to breed the Havanese and how long they have been breeding.
