    The first college Gates attended was the College of William and Mary. It was here he obtained his B.A. in History, graduating in 1965.

    During his schooling at William & Mary, Gates became a member and the president of the school's Alpha Phi Omega chapter, as well the Young Republicans. On top of those two groups, Gates also became the business manager for the school's literary and art magazine.

    Gates attended graduate school at Indiana University where he received his M.A. in History in 1966. He then attended Georgetown
