He is to be tried by the Inquisition and given a chance to confess his sins. But he suspects - as does everyone else in the small town - that the Inquisitor, priest, nuns and the rest are no more than co-conspirators in someone else’s cruel sex games. That someone else is the Duchess, a wicked and beautiful young woman recently married to the Duke in exchange for the freedom to pick and choose the men she takes, uses, and tortures.

Chained, naked and helpless, he scans the whips and other tools of torture on the table across from him. At first, he sees nothing he feels incapable of handling - or even enjoying depending upon how it’s used. Then he spies the metal claws of the spider resting in hot coals.
