Book One - Chapter 1
Missygirl the calico cat sat attentively observing her surroundings as one of five furry residents of a large box situated inside a pet store on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills when the big guy first saw her and she him. Missygirl behaved as if she had been expecting the big guy, catching and holding his eye with one endearing glance and demanding to know what took you so long?
. At about half the size of her four sleeping brothers she was by far the smallest kitten, no larger than your fist, but this seemed not to matter much to her and only served to enhance her striking appearance.
It was clearly apparent to any valid judge of such matters that twice as much cat had been packed into half as much space! The big guy looking at her was immediately affected by her unusual attitude, a kind of look-you-in-the-eye, don’t just stand there staring at me with that silly look on your face
, I’m stuck in this box and what are you gonna do about it?
type of expression. The fact that he knew what she was thinking was an immediate signal that here was the kitty he had been seeking!
It was as if a powerful two-way supernatural link-up of some kind had clicked on between Missygirl and the big guy guiding him 30 miles out of his way to find this cat waiting for him! Was this even possible? The results were self-evident because here he was and here she was in the same room looking at one another and thinking the same thing! Exactly when awareness of this connection first began is difficult to pinpoint but it was definitely something new, something tangible and it worked over great distances, or at least that was what it felt like to the big guy. Think of it this way: either his mind and her mind were attuned to the same cosmic wavelength thereby enabling this mysterious rapport not just to exist but also to flourish or some brand of interspecies empathy was hard at work enabling this magic channel of understanding between these two uniquely different individuals. Any way you look at it this peculiar bond was as real to these two as the ground beneath your feet is to you.
Separating these kittens was not the big guy’s wish but he had space for only two in his home. Missygirl needed one of her brothers to accompany her but which one? The choice would not be an easy one because these four brothers were as alike as peas in a pod except for minor differences in coloration. Except for one. They all became active when they became aware the big guy was looking them over. Loco was completely white except for his black tail, a black patch on one ear and one black spot on his right front leg. Missygirl has a similar black spot on each of her back legs. Both furry bundles were rescued from this place on this day but had to say goodbye to three wailing brothers who were destined to find good homes as well.
These two tiny American shorthair kittens in their small cardboard box mewed all the time on the way to their new home. Well, to be fair, one mewed and one squeaked. They were only eight weeks new, had no idea what next to expect and were very upset over being moved around so indignantly even if it was for their own safety.
Missygirl could not mew just quite yet. She would start a mew but then break off mid-mew making it sound more like a little squeak. This became a lifelong habit for her. Because of this her secret name is ‘Squeaker’. With practice she got a little further along in the mew process which came out as ‘mmmrrr’. This sound she would always make when approving what constitutes a proper ear rub technique or sometimes she would use this sound as her leave me alone I’m busy
message. It wasn’t until much later that she would speak full meows interspersed with the broken mews which never stopped happening. She developed a method of using staccato mews that came out sounding like mmmack-ack-ack
and for this her super-secret name is ‘Ack Ack’.
Missygirl’s secret and super-secret names are known only by her and her new friends and now by you. They are meant to be used in any emergency situation requiring absolutely positive identification. Speak either of these secret names if you should meet up with Missygirl but are not entirely certain it is she. Missygirl will look at you if she hears either of these names although she will not approach you! Missygirl has one other ultra-secret name that cannot be revealed else it would no longer be confidential or useful!
Missygirl remained skittish for the first few days in her new home as would be expected and natural. A very careful calico cat is she! She would venture out of whatever hiding place she was currently occupying only when she just had to have food or water or if she had need of the local litter box. She was very careful about this issue what with standard cat protocol being as demanding as it is! With some gentle encouragement from her new friends her
