      Chapter One

      Sart leaned down and lifted her from the floor, setting her on her feet before him.  As far as he knew, he’d never made a bad ruling before her, but what else could he have done?  Though she had proclaimed her innocence time and again, she withheld the truth from them all.  Bile rose as he remembered her screams as the guards ripped off her wings. Knowing it wasn’t justified would gnaw at him forever.

      Terror filled her eyes as she stared at him. More fear for her sister than herself. We might not have been as hard on Ryn as we were on you.  Didn’t you ever consider that we might have taken pity on her, instead of punishing you for withholding the truth of what happened?

      She shook her head, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. I didn’t think, I reacted.

      For the first time in his life he didn’t know what to do. Pulling her to his chest, he wrapped his arms around her, lowering his head to her shoulder.

      The only way you can get your wings back is to tell the tribunal the truth.

      She tried to pull back, but he held her against him.  Her head shook back and forth. I can’t do that.  What’s done is done.
