    Introduction

    My name is Marc C. Carroll.

    This story explores the dark side of bullying and spirituality. This short story is a bit graphic, so discretion has been advised.

    SAMMY

    My story begins in 1987. My mom was being ushered into the emergency room of the Gold Creek Hospital in Northern Ontario, Canada. Only six months into my existence, I was ready to see the world.

    It was a moment of high tension. My then sixteen-year-old mother, Jennifer King, was crying, holding her stomach, struggling as she directed the paramedic.

    Someone call my mom! Something is wrong.

    The paramedic, having a somewhat hard time discerning between her cries and her words, replied, Don’t worry. The doctor is on his way. Do you know where your husband is?

    My mother yelled in response, I’m not married. My boyfriend has gone fishing. Where’s my mother? The paramedic calmly remained focused as the doctor walked in.

    Get Ms. King in Room B, the doctor quickly delegated, rushing through the room. The paramedic escorted my mother accordingly.

    Finally, after what seemed like an eternity to my mother, they arrived in Room B. The nurse within the room ushered her to her bed, flagging down the midwife. After establishing my mother, the nurse quickly diagnosed the situation.

    She is fully dilated, the nurse calmly informed the doctor as he walked in.

    Very well, prepare. We need to get the baby out.

    Back in the waiting room, my grandmother Pam, or otherwise known as Gama, was pacing back and forth, praying.
