The storm seemed to come from nowhere. It was something Jo knew from her reading could happen, but she’d never imagined it would happen to them. She clung to Billy’s hand as their dad did his best to head for land - which seemed much too far away for them to be able to make it. Waves were going right over the top of the boat they’d hired. A rope wrapped around her waist and she realized after it was knotted tightly that Dan was making sure the three of them would stay together. Fortunately, he’d done it just in time, as it was seconds after he’d attached Billy that a huge wave knocked the boat over. Until it happened, it was something that seemed impossible.

Spluttering, Jo swam upwards. Tugging her brothers with her was hard work, but soon they joined her, and the three of them reached the surface in what seemed to be no time at all. Breathing deeply, she looked around. We can’t wait for them. Dan started swimming in the direction of the island in the distance. Mom and Dad will be fine. It’s Billy I’m worried about.

Jo realized then that Billy was between the two of them. Of the three, he was the weakest swimmer, and she joined Dan in powering towards land she wasn’t certain they were going to reach before they got too tired. Billy managed to keep up for a little while, before it became obvious he was tiring, and if it hadn’t been for the rope, he probably would have given up trying. You can do it, Billy. Jo kept swimming, ignoring the waves that crashed over her head and the lightning that kept changing the way everything looked. We’re going to get to that land, and when we do you can have a rest.

Keeping Billy going was what gave Jo the strength to keep going, even when her arms started feeling like they couldn’t keep going. She knew she couldn’t stop. She knew Dan was going to be feeling exactly the same way
