Chapter 1 – Origins & Evolution of the Battlefield Franchise

The original Battlefield 1942 was released in 2002 by the American video game publisher, Electronic Arts. The game was developed by a video game company in Sweden Digital Illusions CE. The first game was available for Windows and Mac computers, and became a huge success.

The game’s main feature is a teamwork-oriented battle ground without storyline limitations that is present in most first-person shooter games in its time. Players can either choose to play in single player and practice with AI players, or go straight ahead into the highly competitive multiplayer mode which is playable on the internet or over a Local Area Network (LAN).The fast-paced and highly explosive gaming experience became the trademark of the franchise.

Throughout the decade, numerous Battlefield sequels were released across different platforms. These titles are the greatest contributors to the Battlefield series of war games; offering innovations, game systems, and graphic upgrades that ultimately led to the development of Battlefield 4.
