Sean Cooper is coming back to town, Chloe’s neighbor and friend Anna gushed as they sat on their joined patio. I wonder if we’ll get to see him.

Chloe Flower moistened her lips at the thought of seeing her ex-boyfriend. The last time she’d seen Sean—in the backseat of his old Firebird—they’d lost their virginities together. Then, he’d taken off for California in hopes of becoming a star, leaving Chloe to mend a broken heart. She had to admit, she’d hoped he’d be back in a year with a crushed ego.

It had been three years now. He hadn’t returned once, and he certainly wasn’t returning with a bruised ego. Sean Cooper was, well, Sean Cooper. This year he’d been named People’s Sexiest Man. And she had to give credit where due, he’d been hot in high school, but now he was drop-dead-gorgeous. In the photo on the magazine’s cover, it almost looked like his teeth sparkled, and his dark hair had that just-out-of-bed tousled look.

Rumor was Ms. Cooper, the grandmother who’d raised him, was sick. For the past three years he’d always flown her to him, but she was refusing to get on a plane, so Sean was coming to Bradberry.

Chloe had an on-going friendship with Ms. Cooper, and the last time she’d seen her, the woman had seemed perfectly fine. What did the old woman have up her sleeve?

The whole town was preparing for Sean Cooper’s return. All around, the landscapers were out trimming bushes, planting flowers, and making sure everything looked perfect. This was apparently a big deal. Were they planning on giving him a key to the city as well?
