It was the crack of dawn when Sam Alders reached the scene of the crime. He pulled his car up to the curb, not far from the battalion of flashing lights and police officers that blocked the remainder of the street. As he stepped out onto the sidewalk, he hunched his shoulders and thrust his hands into the pockets of his heavy coat, shivering in the cool morning air.

I don’t know how you stand this cold, Felix, Alders said.

He directed the comment at the man who had emerged from the passenger-side door. This man was very strange in appearance. Though he was certainly a young man, his dark hair grayed at the temples well before his time. His skin was deathly pale, and there was something about his features that suggested tremendous, formidable cleverness. He was also wearing a baggy black jacket that hung loose off of his thin build and obviously afforded him little protection from the elements, and it was this that had drawn Alders’ comment. Of course, Alders knew perfectly well there was a very good reason for Felix’s apparently less-than-practical garb - Felix Green was a kleptomaniac, and he used the infinite folds of his jacket to conceal items that he had pilfered over the course of an average day. Fortunately for Felix, he was also Great Redmond City’s top private murder investigator, and his petty thievery had thus far been overlooked.

Felix did not reply to Alders’ comment about the cold. Instead, he turned his attention to the nearby flashing lights. The police had drawn a prohibitive line of yellow tape and emergency vehicles around a block of unattractive low-rent houses, squished so close together there was hardly an inch between their walls. After surveying the center house, a small building with peeling green paint, Felix approached the police line, Alders not far behind him. Alders - himself a former police officer - spoke quickly to one of the officers nearby, who nodded and disappeared into this dilapidated green house.

    They were briefly left alone.

Boy, Alders muttered, looking at the state of the building before them. This house is exactly the sort of place Chief Breckinridge wants to knock down

Then it is best to leave it standing, Felix said with a wry sort of smile. Robert Breckinridge was the Great Redmond Police
