    THE DOBERMANN PINSCHER

In expressing a liking for the appearance of the Dobermann Pinscher, I hope I shall not be accused of lack of patriotism. When Mrs. A. E. Mann exhibited one at the Kennel Club show of 1928, it impressed me as being very attractive in its smooth, lustrous black-and-tan coat. Something after the style of a tall Manchester Terrier with cropped ears; lithe and active, symmetrical in shape, and of alert expression, it had many admirers.

The breed is of composite origin, having been produced by Herr Dobermann about 1865. These dogs are used in South Africa for destroying jackals. A few more have since been imported.

    THE DOBERMANN PINSCHER

THE Dobermann Pinschers are rapidly taking their place amongst other breeds, and are today, both in the British Isles and America, to be found in fair numbers, although not many years ago they were practically unknown.

They are German dogs, and are classed as terriers. In appearance they are somewhat distinctive; still, as to their production we are, of course, left guessing; but, in view of the fact that they have in a degree certain points which are outstanding, it may be assumed that one of our old English terriers has helped in their production, possibly the Manchester, and one of the Continental dogs was used to produce them. However, let us give credit where it is due, and admit the Dobermanns to be ideal in many ways.

These dogs are splendid companions, very intelligent, good-tempered devoted, and courageous; they are splendid vermin killers, and can do all that a terrier should. One would class them as being attractive, and their intelligent expression, together with being alert and sagacious, should help them in being a very popular animal in the near future.

They should have dark eyes, long muzzle which is moderately fine, and well-muscled cheeks; the ears should be neither too close nor too pointed; the tail should not exceed 6 inches (shorter for preference), and the coat should be hardly as silky as that of the Manchester terrier but have the same black-and-tan markings. Often we see specimens with a white patch on the chest.

Another type of Pinscher is that known as the wire-haired, which is smaller in every way and is acknowledged as one of the best ratters possible to produce. He has a hard, rough, wiry coat which stands out from the body; well-developed jaws and full muzzle; colour iron-grey, silver-grey, dull charcoal black, or pepper and salt. The hair on the head is shorter than on the body, and he possesses a decided beard or whisker.

    DOBERMAN MOTHERHOOD

To British readers this picture is of more than usual interest because it shows the noted German breed, the Doberman (also popular in America) with a family

    THE DOBERMANN-PINSCHER.

There is something very unusual in the build of the Dobermann-Pinscher, suggesting quickness, intelligence and activity.

    GOOD TYPES.

Two fine examples of the Dobermann-Pinscher are seen here. These dogs have been trained for police work and were shown at the Police Dogs Show in Moscow.

This bread, although a very important one in Germany, is seldom seen in England.

    A GOOD EFFORT.

In Germany Dobermanns are frequently used for Police work. Here is one going through a phase of its training for this purpose.

    OFF THE SET.

When Clive Brook is off duty there is nothing he likes better than a stroll in his beautiful garden, a pipe, and the company of his best canine pal, a Dobermann-Pinseher.

    A TYPICAL FEMALE.

The carriage of the breed shows alert expectation and physical energy. It might be said to resemble a giant specimen of the Manchester Terrier.

    WITH THE FORESTER.

In Eastern Switzerland the foresters take with them a Dobermann-Pinscher as a guard and companion. In addition, a Dobermann is capable of doing quite a lot of useful work.

Dobermann-Pinscher.—There are a few, a very few, Dobermann-Pinschers in this country, and those born here are,
