E.g. [Example]

e.g. is the abbreviated form of exempli gratia. This is from Latin.

In Latin exempli gratia means ‘for example’.

In English we are using the shortened form ,taking the first letter of these two words.

Postpone –Advance

The opposite [antonym] of ‘Postpone’ is ‘Advance’.

Some people use ‘Prepone’. It is wrong. There is no

such word in English Language.

Inquiry-Enquiry

‘Inquiry’ and ‘Enquiry’ both are not different. Both mean the same.

They have the same meaning.

He enquired.

He inquired.

Used to

We must use used to only to refer ‘dis continued habits.’

[Past habits]

Example:

a) I used to get up at 5 o’clock when I was in Delhi.

Now,I am not in Delhi. Also, I am not getting up at 5 o’clock.

b) He used to come late when he was in Class-IX.

Now, he is not coming late. Also ,he is not in Class-IX.

‘N.B’ comes from Latin. In Latin language it means ‘note well ‘ .

We are using the first letter of each word .

In English language it [N.B] is used in the same sense.

Pay attention

It is mostly used in legal Papers. It is given to draw the attention of the readers.

Advise-Advice

Advise [s] – is used as Verb

Advice [c]- is used as noun

Examples:

I advised him [Verb]

This is my advice to you. [Noun]

Hang

The verb ‘hang’ has two past tenses and two past participles.

Hanged -------- For Persons Hung --------For things

Say:

The criminal was hanged.

Don’t say:

The criminal was hung.

Say:

I hung my shirt.

Don’t say:

I hanged my shirt.

The dot [ . ] above the letters ‘i’ and ‘j’

Is known as ‘Superscript dot’.

Beat [Verb]

‘Beat’ is the only verb which has the same ‘present tense form’ and ‘past tense form’.

The pronunciation is also the same.
