    Chapter 1

It was the late 1600s and Leanna Lemon stood firmly on solid ground as she walked down off the pier onto the rocky shoreline. She felt it strange after having to deal with being rocked about by the sea day and night for what seemed like an eternity travelling from England. Now on the shore of Boston, it felt just as strange to be on land after the long journey on the sea. The trees in the distance seemed to stretch for miles. The houses all lined in rows seemed to blend up towards the trees in their varying shades of green. The trees were quite different from the trees Leanna knew in her home town of Warwickshire. After surveying the landscape, Leanna decided to take a seat upon one of the many barrels that lay about the area while she waited for the captain to finish with his duties. Captain Holloway was a kind, rough old sailor that was her only friend on this unknown continent. She wrapped her grey duffle coat around herself tightly to protect herself from the cold and windy air. Leanna patiently sat there trying not to shiver from the cold that seemed to go right through her coat even though she was well covered. The weather was pretty chilly for May and the ship was the first one of the season to be carrying supplies for the colonists from across the seas.

Leanna couldn't help but think about the past and speculate on the future ahead of her as she sat there just waiting. Her mind wandered to the old church where her father used to preach at since long before she was born. To the very churchyard where both her mother and father lay burried. She envisioned the parsonage next to the old grey church where she was born to the parents long past their prime. She saw the worn pathway from the parsonage to the vestry of the church that her father walked daily. She remembered the small rooms of the parsonage that was her home. Now, her parents slept soundly in the churchyard without a care of their orphaned child. She was never to see them again on this earth. Clara, their maid servant also rested in that graveyard along with the parents of Leanna. Just before leaving England for America, Leanna stood over the three graves to say her goodbyes before she left. She placed upon the graves wild roses that she found growing near by. Then she left England forever.

None of the parishioners had the means even if they had the will to take her in. There was a boy who swore to take her as his bride if she was still upon the earth when he became of suitable age. His parents didn't encourage this as she was a daughter of a clergyman and they were
