    Zach nodded. This is it. The NIS-3. A step up from the last model.

    Danny rotated the helmet in his hands. It's a lot less bulky, at least. Is it more powerful?

    Yeah, by quite a bit, he confirmed.

    How'd you manage to score them? Selene asked.

    Zach tossed her another one. Benefits of being on the development team. I got us into the World at War beta, and part of that includes testing out the new neuro-helmet.

    Why not use the older models? she asked.

    Because the older models are built for small-scale virtual realities. Not for a full-sized world like the one that's coming out. And even the small arenas in the beta might be too much for a NIS-1. There's no way it can handle the amount of computing needed to render a full-sized virtual world.

    Danny flipped around the helmet and looked at the back. I'm assuming this slot is where the game cartridge goes in?

    That'd be correct.

    So we're back to cartridges, huh? Selene commented. Almost one hundred years later, and we've circled back to using the same video game tech.

    Yeah, except our cartridges can store a heck of a lot more data on them, Zach said.

    So... What's it like, inside the world? Danny asked him.

    Zach shrugged. To be honest, I'm not entire sure myself. Level design isn't my thing, you know?

    He was indeed on the development team, but Zach's specialization was communications. He had a vague idea about what everyone else
