He pressed his nose against the glass.
He backed up and ran towards the mirror. He stopped right before hitting it, his courage leaving him.
He examined the piece again. He looked at the frame. It was sleek and metallic. The glass inside the frame was smooth, perfect. The picture inside the frame was ever-changing. It was the size of an average human when he stood to his full height, maybe a little taller. It was as wide as an average human, too. He had bought it as a painting, but he had other inklings now. He had a feeling it was more than it was being auctioned off as. It seemed to be more than a simple painting. On closer examination, now that it was in his study, he thought it might be some sort of portal. But he did not know how to get to the other side. There was no obvious activation method.
Rin,
said the man behind him. Well, Rin supposed that he was a man. You never could tell with nixats. Their species did not even have hair to help you out, just those tiny, variegated, green scales that covered their bodies. Not to mention those odd frills above their eyes. It proved an evolutionary mystery to many, including Rin. He did not see the point in broadcasting your emotions through color. It meant sometimes others knew what you felt before you did, and it took years of training to have some sort of control over it. At least, that’s what Rin had been taught about the nixats.
