    Vegetable Gardening And Its Importance

Vegetable gardening is an art and the science of vegetable production within the vicinity of your home mainly for own consumption. It is referred to as an art because it entails activities such as measuring distances, building of structures, tilling of land, planting of vegetable crops, harvesting and other activities that require skill other than knowledge. It is also considered to be a science as it entails soil science, entomology and crop pathology.

Soil science is the study of soil and it is crucial in vegetable gardening, as different vegetables require different soil characteristics to produce optimally. Entomology is the study of insects. Vegetables are prone to destruction by insects therefore vegetable gardening requires some knowledge of insects for effective control measures to be put in place at the right time. Crop pathology is the study of plant diseases, it is important to understand the diseases that are likely to affect your crops so as to control them in time.

Generally, these roots are enlarged and act as a food store, which is in the form of carbohydrates. Examples of root vegetables include carrots, sweet potatoes, turnip, turmeric, ginger, arrowroot and others.

In vegetable gardening, stem vegetables are crops whose stems are used as food. Primarily this refers to above ground stems as not all stems are above ground. Examples of stem vegetables include asparagus and celery. Stem vegetables form the lowest percentage of garden vegetables.

    Leafy Vegetables

These form the biggest percentage of garden vegetables. Their leaves are utilized as food and sometimes their shoots and petioles as well. Although a wide variety of crops are leafy vegetables, they are used in different combinations to optimize food taste. Examples of leaf
