Surfacing: A Young Adult Romantic Horror Screenplay
()
About this ebook
What if your life was caught up in the relentless grip of a nightmare you couldn't escape?
Andromeda Adriano wakes up hungover and in an unsettling relationship with a tattooed brute who isn't Vic. She has a C-section scar, but no baby, and no memory of what happened. When she asks about the baby, her stonewalling husband denies one ever existed. She feels strangled by unanswered questions and an eerie feeling that something is very wrong. The sequel to Shattered drives a wedge between Andromeda and Vic by introducing "the other woman." As much as Andromeda feels betrayed, she has to enlist Vic's help to find their baby before the child is used for experimentation by Satanists in this breakneck thrill ride. Andromeda's determination burns up the pages as she finds unlikely allies and unexpected enemies while diving deeper into the truth of this haunting conspiracy that becomes as compelling as the best tabloid headlines.
Will Andromeda and Vic be able to escape the nightmare with their innocent baby, or will they lose everything to the darkest forces of evil? How far would you go to keep your child safe? A seducing combination of romance and horror, Surfacing answers the questions that burn in your heart..

INT. VIC'S RENTAL CAR - AFTERNOON
ANDROMEDA RAVYN ADRIANO (18) clutches a gossip magazine with fingernails painted in chipping black polish as she squints through the dusty windshield of the gray Lexus rental car. Her mid-length straight hair is dyed midnight black, and her all-black attire is loose and baggy over her enormous seven-months-pregnant belly. Beside her in the driver's seat sits VIC IGNATIUS GARRETT (23). He hunches over the wheel, his knuckles gripping it until they are white as he also peers through the dirty windshield and chews a toothpick nervously between his teeth. His head is shiny and bald, with the only hair on his body being his well-groomed blond eyebrows. His wiry and athletic six-foot-two frame dressed in casual wear seems too large for the tiny car. The SILVER medical alert bracelet on his left wrist catches the sun before he turns to look at Andromeda.
VIC
You ready?
Andromeda reaches up to the GOLD Star of David necklace and fiddles with it, biting her lip. The BLUE sign just barely seen through the windshield depicts a pedestrian walking and an arrow with the word Tijuana.
Vic reaches over to put his hand on her thigh and squeeze gently, but Andromeda doesn't look reassured.
ANDROMEDA
You think they're just gonna fuckin' let us go? Just like that?
Vic's jaw clenches as he looks toward the BLUE sign. He releases the fabric of her pants and rubs his hand over his shiny, bald head.
VIC
We got to try, right? If we don't, then what was all this for?
ANDROMEDA
They're gonna be pissed they spent all that money to make some genetically-engineered 'Satan' baby, and now we're takin' off with her.
Vic turns to her again.
VIC
So? She's ours.
Andromeda smiles.
ANDROMEDA
Yeah. She is.
Vic moves the toothpick around in his mouth as if projecting his anxiety.
ANDROMEDA (CONT'D)
I'm gonna miss my family. Sucks I can't ever see them again.
VIC
We got to do what we got to do. Unless you changed your mind.
He turns to look at her. She shakes her head 'no' emphatically.
ANDROMEDA
Fuck that. I'm not letting those bastards have her.
VIC
Well, then we got to go. They're probably already on their way.
Andromeda nods. Vic throws the toothpick out the open window. They both climb out of the car.
EXT. TIJUANA BORDER CROSSING - AFTERNOON
Andromeda teeters and puts a hand to her belly as she stands behind the trunk of the car watching Vic pull out their duffle bags. His eyes dart around as PEOPLE (various ages) of various races, but mostly Hispanic, walk toward the WHITE-painted crosswalk heading toward the border entrance. No one seems to take notice them. He sets the bags on the asphalt before turning to KISS her gently on the mouth. When he pulls back, their eyes lock.
ANDROMEDA
I never said thank you for defecting, Vic. You coulda stayed. You had a cush job.
Vic shakes his head.
VIC
No, darlin'. It was the right thing to do.
ANDROMEDA
I know, but still.
VIC
You know I would do anything for you and our baby. I would give my life to keep you safe.
Vic leans down to pick up the bags, then holds his hand out to her as he straightens up. She smiles and GRABS his hand tightly. The sun bears down on them as they move slowly across the parking lot toward the border crossing sign. Just as Andromeda puts her foot out to step into the crosswalk, a car slams on its breaks and STOPS inches from her body. Vic drops the bags and yanks Andromeda backward onto the sidewalk just in time. The car swerves and drives around them, HONKING as it passes. Vic grabs Andromeda tightly and buries his nose in her neck. They both breathe heavily. He slowly releases her as his eyes scan their surroundings. He reaches down for the bags again.
VIC (CONT'D) (muttering)
Motherfucker. Are you okay?
She nods 'yes' still breathing heavily. He waits for her to catch her breath before they make their way toward the door with rotating bars. Vic gestures to Andromeda to go first and she hesitates, looking into his eyes. He nods 'yes.' She turns and is about to step through when a large man wearing a GRAY pin-striped suit ROYAL (37) suddenly knocks her sideways. She SCREAMS as she stumbles, but the gray-suited man catches her. She looks up into his face, confused, before turning toward Vic. He struggles and SHOUTS as he is dragged off by two burly MEN (30's) in similar suits. Andromeda's face twists in the horror of realization.
ANDROMEDA
Vic! No!
She pulls a tiny GUN out of her cleavage as the two men shove Vic into a black SUV with tinted windows. Another gray-suited man MANNI (47) rushes through the crowd toward Andromeda. A radio is pressed to his mouth and dark sunglasses cover his eyes. She turns to point her gun at Royal, but he YANKS it away. She screams as he grabs her and begins to drag her toward a second black SUV. She kicks and punches, but he won't let her go. People in the crowd scream, and some duck or run. Andromeda's eyes follow the first SUV as it drives away.
ANDROMEDA (CONT'D)
Let me go, you bastard! You can't do this. You can't do this.
Manni comes up next to them. His mouth is a grim line.
MANNI
Get her into the car. I got to go do some crowd control.
Royal nods as he drags Andromeda toward the SUV. Manni moves off into the crowd. She continues to struggle and KICK, but she is quickly winded. No one in the crowd makes eye-contact with her as she is dragged past. She SCREAMS again, so Royal clamps a hand over her mouth.
ROYAL
Shit. Stop making a scene. Do you want me to hurt you?
He releases her mouth.
ANDROMEDA
Fine, hurt me. I don't care. It's already over.
He shakes his head 'no' and shoves her forward into the open, waiting door of the SUV.
SUPER: FIFTEEN MONTHS LATER
INT. BOO'S BEDROOM - MORNING
Andromeda wakes up and rolls over in a bed with tangled sheets. She is no longer pregnant and very thin, bony in fact. She wears only a WHITE undershirt and underwear. Rain beats down on the windows outside. The gray light is dim in the bedroom. She sits up in bed as the sounds of dishes CLANKING in the sink come from the other room. There is a fifth of nearly-empty Jack Daniels and a liquor glass on the table beside her. Her black hair is cut short to her chin and dull-looking. She no longer wears her GOLD Star of David necklace.
She emerges from bed and goes to stand in front of a full-length mirror just inside the closet door. The hem of her undershirt is raised enough to reveal an inflamed RED C-section scar crossing her lower belly. She stares at it as if she can't remember why it is there, then slowly presses the fingers
