INTRODUCTION

DAVID STEINMAN AND I WERE HONORED to be the first medical reporters to break the IP6 with inositol story in the popular press when we began publishing our reports in 1998 in The Doctors’ Prescription for Healthy Living. Since then we have received an overwhelming response from readers, many of whom have cancer or know or love someone who does. As the first E-mails began reaching us, we thought that, well, this is interesting. Here are a few letters from people with cancer who want to know more about this amazing substance with its impeccable scientific studies, but as more and more E-mails poured in by the hundreds, we knew that we were riding the crest of a giant wave of enthusiasm. It was a saddening enthusiasm because the people writing us were desperate to live, to survive their cancer, and they needed help. IP6 with inositol seemed to offer that help.

In retrospect, we are not surprised. Tragically, the prevention and treatment of cancer has become of widespread, intense importance to millions of Americans today, and IP6 with inositol, with its strongly scientifically documented anticancer activity and complete safety, probably ought to be used by every American today. We truly believe that if it were put into use by all persons living in America and else-where today, our cancer rates would reflect a significant decrease in both incidence and mortality. That is not to say that IP6 with inositol alone is the total answer to the cancer epidemic, but it is, in our opinion, part of the answer. We wish it were not necessary. We wish that faulty genes, poor diet, pervasive environmental pollution, tobacco, carcinogens in consumer products and foods and beverages, and our decreasing ozone layer (that allows more solar radiation to penetrate our environment) were not so much part of our lives today to the extent that they have become, and that our cancer risks were decreasing instead of increasing. But they are. As such, IP6 with inositol, a cancer killer, is a hired hand whom we need to position on our side.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is responsible for directing the nation’s war on cancer. Even so, from 1950 to 1989, the overall incidence of cancer in the United States (adjusted for the aging population) rose by approximately 44 percent, with lung cancer because of smoking accounting for less than a quarter of this increase. Age-adjusted incidence rates for breast cancer and male colon cancer for the general U.S. population have increased by over 50 percent, whereas the rates for some less common cancers, such as malignant melanoma, certain lymphomas, and male kidney cancer have increased by over 100 percent. Childhood cancer has also increased by about 20 percent. Higher cancer rates still are seen for people living in highly urbanized and industrialized counties (in the vicinity of petrochemical, mining, smelting, and nuclear weapons plants), and for workers in these industries. Today, greater than one in three Americans will be stricken with cancer in their lifetime and greater than one in four will die. Cancer has overtaken heart disease as the leading killer of middle-aged Americans, and the baby boom generation is at a far higher cancer risk than its grandparents’ generation. Pollution and our personal lifestyle and dietary habits are also wreaking havoc on our cellular health. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus has increased 350 percent among white men over the last 20 years. As reported in the journal Cancer, annual cases rose from 0.7 per 100,000 in 1974-76 to 3.2 per 100,000 in 1992-94. Nearly 90 percent of patients with esophageal cancer die within five years of contracting the disease. The study was conducted by researchers from the NCI and the International Epidemiology Institute. They speculate that the reasons for this sharp increase may include smoking and obesity.

In two major books that my co-author David Steinman has written with international cancer expert Samuel S. Epstein, M.D., it has been observed that the U.S. National Cancer Institute has taken a decidedly indifferent, if not hostile, view toward prevention despite the fact that the war on cancer is clearly being lost.¹,² The NCI continues to lead the public and Congress into believing that we are winning the war against cancer, with victory possible only given more time and money. The NCI and the American Cancer Society (ACS) also insist that there have been major advances in the treatment and cure of cancer, that there has been no increase in cancer rates (except for lung cancer, which is attributed exclusively to smoking).
