INTRODUCTION
When I first decided to write High-Tech Toys, I had my eye on some of the things I had heard about: grope suits, holographic porn, interactive software. Unfortunately, as I did my research, I came to realize that most of these things were what software people call vaporware
(stuff that largely exists in the imagination) or were so far into their technological infancy as to be useless to the average perv.
However, at the same time, I realized just how technological were some of the things I use in my daily play. In a situation familiar to fiction writers, the characters
took over the book. With new eyes, I looked at familiar things like silicone buttplugs, Velcro, violet wands and TENS units. These are mature technologies, but oh so handy in the dungeon.
In the finest tradition of our mentor-driven lifestyle, so many people stepped forward to help, including Carol Queen of Good Vibrations, Tom Stewart, president of SportSheets, and the people at Lady Calston. Others, like the people at Paradise Electro Stimulations, were a bit less forthcoming, and I deeply miss getting their input. No one can be an expert on all of the neat stuff that’s available now, so it’s nice to have help explaining the details. I’ve tried to give credit in the text for specific bits of information, but any mistakes or misstatements are mine and mine alone. Where appropriate, I’ve given the URL of interesting websites, but keenly aware that not everyone has a computer handy and that the government has blocked many of these websites from the computers in libraries (to protect us, of course), I’ve tried to summarize the pertinent information.
When doing technological stuff, it’s easy to fall into the trap of If I can do it, I will do it.
Please try to remember that what we do is for the pleasure of our partners and ourselves. Nobody likes everything in the scene. It’s important to measure what I can do
against what’s fun.
If it isn’t fun, then all the flashing lights, Jacob’s ladders and buzzing toys in the world won’t change that.
Read on. I hope you find that you like the book as much as I’ve enjoyed doing the research.
CHAPTER 1. PERVERTABLE HIGH-
TECH MATERIALS
HIGH- TECH PENETRATION TOYS
• Jelly. When dildoes first appeared, probably about the time cave women discovered that inanimate objects didn’t get soft and defensive just when things were getting interesting (original lie: Don’t worry, dear, I just want to cuddle
), they came in a kaleidoscopic range of materials. In various museums and private collections, I’ve seen stone dildoes, wax ones, ones carved from wood and even one made from a human cock. (The first instance of recycling?) But in recent times, the vast majority of dildoes, buttplugs and other insertables have been made from natural latex.
Latex makes a good material for these toys. It’s soft enough to mimic the real thing and takes dyes readily, but it does have drawbacks. One of the most important is that, as latex materials become more common, more and more people are discovering an allergy to latex. The most common symptoms of this affliction are itching, hives and redness, but when we’re talking about our or our partner’s genitals, asshole or other fun places, that’s pretty damned serious. More sensitive individuals can go into shock and even die.
