Chapter 1
I hurried home and walked through the front door with an expression of urgency on my face.
Penny, we need to talk.
Penny was smiling and suddenly changed her expression--her smile changed to a worried frown, Is it important?
I gave Penny a quick kiss, Yes.
Penny walked towards the interior of the house, Can we talk in here?
I followed her, No.
Penny picked up Michael, We can talk somewhere else.
Penny placed Michael into his car seat and snapped the clamps shut. I carried the car seat to the blue, GMC Yukon, and we both worked to secure Michael in place. Penny hugged Maggie and said we would be back in a few hours and not to prepare dinner. Maggie asked if everything was ok. Penny said everything was fine. Penny waved to Maggie as she walked out the door.
I started the engine and pressed the accelerator pedal. The familiar lunge forward of power under the hood jolted us--it wasn't like the X-29's power, but it would do. We moved rapidly down the road. We drove silently to the top of Lookout Point,
while Penny held her hands firmly together. Upon arriving, the truck screeched to a halt, and we got out of the vehicle. In the past, we enjoyed traveling to Lookout Point
on lazy Sunday drives and standing near the edge of the mountain, viewing the valley below. From this height, the houses appeared neatly arranged into curvilinear rows, and green trees painted the landscape. We could identify different familiar buildings and the location of schools.
I looked at Penny and cleared my throat.
I think someone in Positron is trying to frame me. Jasen and George have been acting differently toward me. They don't include me in the conversations, and they are practicing thought blocking techniques when I am near them.
Penny pushed back her hair, What is that?
I saw Penny was confused. It is like a low sounding hum that blocks my ability to hear their thoughts when near them. The hum blocks the sending and receiving thought messages. Penny moved closer to me and hugged me,
Who do you think is framing you?" I looked into Penny’s eyes.
I don't know.
Do you think Jasen and George blame me for what happened to Captain Kline? After all, I did fight the captain on the moon. It would be silly to think that I staged the whole incident. Penny, what should I do?"
Penny pressed her head against my chest, I know Jasen and George would never turn against you. Henry, you're a hero to them, you're part of the team. I think you need to discover and flush him or her out into the open.
I kissed Penny and said, That sounds like a good idea. It will be tougher to find the mole without Jasen and George's help, but I can do it. I will have to work on my own.
I kissed Penny again--never enough--and we returned home. If I was being wiretapped at home, I didn't want to let them know I was on to them. The open Lookout Point
was perfect for talking securely. I valued Penny's ability to listen and think; she was a very intelligent woman.
The next day, I boarded a plane for Positron headquarters in Canada. At Positron, Adam greeted me with a hug. The headquarters building was composed of glass and steel. The building angled upward high into the sky. The building was a high-tech marvel combining art and engineering to create an aesthetically-pleasing structure. Inside the building, George and Jasen walked by me without stopping to greet me. They seemed intent on getting to their destinations without distraction. I thought, They are acting strange!
I asked Adam where we were going. Adam started to walk into the building. Isaac wants to see you now. I did not ask any more questions, and we continued our journey in silence. Jasen and George were already seated in Isaac's office. Issac was in his office waiting for us and closed the door behind us.
Henry, sensitive information about Positron security is being leaked. Jasen and George have been protecting you. It looks like someone is trying to make it look like you planted the virus that transformed Captain Kline into the lizard mutate, and there is evidence that you were taking bribery money to leak secrets. Shortly after you arrived back on earth, one million dollars was transferred by swift account into your bank account. Your password was used to access secure operational plans, and we found gold bullion bars in your personal safe. We don’t believe you are the mole. The mole wants us to redirect attention to you as the villain. We are reviewing personnel information and looking for a possible mole, but this process will take time. I was surprised but glad that Jasen and George were on my side. Penny would be relieved, too! Adam typed text into his computer.
You're going to Venice to uncover the mole source. You will travel by X-29 to Venice, and we will have an agent meet you there, take you to a safe house and then instruct you on your mission. You will be briefed in greater detail upon arrival in Venice. Penny will go with you as your cover."
My family boarded the X-29 bound for Venice. The plane vibrated slightly as it lifted off vertically from the airport. The powerful engines quickly lifted the aircraft high into the atmosphere. We could see the homes and structures below slowly disappear out of sight as went ascended upward. The transparent aluminum nano glass automatically tinted to prevent the blinding glare of the sun from hurting our eyes. We traveled in high orbit altitude nearly 3,000 miles per hour for the space of a few hours. Michael slept quietly and woke once to be fed by Penny. I opened my book on Venice while she fed Michael. I read about Venice and discovered it was a city on the water. Penny, having finished feeding Michael, was reading her book. She put down her book, Are you excited about visiting Venice?
Penny smiled back and said, Yes, this is so romantic.
It had been several years, since our honeymoon in Hawaii. The chance to get away with Penny and relax was very appealing. I hoped we would have a chance to relax and enjoy the scenery in Venice. Venice seem very decadent, a place where rich merchants could enjoy entertainment, food and business deals while wasting time in opulence. On the surface, the city seemed very appealing, but underneath, it was corrupt. I hoped to avoid most of the corruption of the ancient merchant city.
The X-29 touched down, and Penny and I prepared to step down out of the aircraft. I helped Penny with Michael, and a foreign security crew helped us with our luggage. Outside the plane, a young man greeted us. My name is Father Alphonsia. We will be traveling by boat to a building near St. Mark's Basilica. Did you have a pleasant flight?
I tried not to be annoyed and said, Yes.
I wanted this to be a pleasure trip, but I knew the undlying reason was far more important. Venice is a very beautiful and intriguing city from the air.
Father Alphonsia instructed, Your transportation will be by boat or foot to our destinations. I want to get you and your family comfortable at the Hotel Flora and then brief you, Henry.
Alphonsia's crew included a man and woman who helped Peggy on the boat. The boat was black with metal bars to hold on to. We stepped onto the boat as it rocked gently in the water waves. We could smell the scent of the ocean mixed with some refuse that had found its way out of someone's home into the water. The sun was very warm, but the ocean breeze cooled us. Father Alphonsia started the boat engine. The boat lurched forward into the waves, and we bounced along
