Where the Action Started
Having to change almost overnight from living the high life of New York with her husband John, plus holding down a top vice president role as a Communication Specialist, and now changing to an entirely new life represented by a single blank sheet of paper was not planned and was not easy to achieve. Lisa had nothing to do with it. This could actually have happened to anyone. Then ensuring that repeat performances didn’t occur required a special vision and determination.
Lisa was the only child of wealthy parents, Hal and Alice Miller, who operated a very successful restaurant and catering business in Dallas. They had hoped she would follow them into the business, but her heart took her in another direction joining John, her high school sweetheart, and they both headed east to Harvard. Once they graduated, in both Marketing and an MBA, marriage was the next item on the agenda highlight before they entered senior management roles with different corporations in New York, and they were very successful in each of their careers. Seven years later, John was head of a corporate commercial legal team and Lisa a VP of a major communications agency.
When an intelligence leak got out regarding a highly secret new product release from Altec Industries, Lisa's largest client and the information fell into the hands of their competitors, all hell broke loose. The investigators quickly established some idle cocktail party chatting and bragging by John had crossed the commercial barrier, and the confidential news was out and into the wrong hands. Lisa's agency instantly lost the massive Altec account. She lost her job, and seven years of professional reputation all went down the drain overnight. The speed of the reactions and the impact caused rumors to fly around the industry with the social media comments turning viral within hours.
Lisa's life was shattered. Forget the apologies, the tears, the flowers, the pleading for forgiveness. There was only one option. John had messed-up big time, and their marriage was finally over. Her life was in limbo. Her career was shredded and scattered in the ridicule and gloating of the media commentators of the commercial world. From being a commercial hero to failure in just a few days creates a body blow only a serious illness could equal.
Even the breakup of the marriage was an aside to the main impact. How would she shrink from the attention of the media, hide from all the photographers, dress so her identification was obscure, then eat and drink at an entirely new part of town? It all takes its toll.
Then an old tourism brochure caught her eye—Cruise from New York!
Within days, Lisa could be miles away hiding on a cruise liner somewhere in the Atlantic. The destination was not as important as getting away from all the pressures of the moment. Nobody would know her. This was perfect escape country! Lisa understood she would still eventually have to return to New York and address her future options, but that was not today. Just one quick call to the cruise booking office could make her escape happen. Then the panic returned when she found out that all the cruises departing from New York were fully booked for the next month.
Finally, some good news. Space was available on a cruise departing in a few days from Vancouver to Alaska, and this provided a fine alternative and returned some sanity into her life. Alaska—now this was a remote location that could solve all her immediate problems.
Escape
The speed of the electronic travel transactions and the ability to instantly confirm her details and issue her boarding passes enabled Lisa to gasp with relief that this escapism could provide her with a solution. It would all get underway within just a few hours. By noon tomorrow, she would be on her cruise liner departing Vancouver and the safety of a world where she would be unknown.
In fact, subject to her ability to pack suitable clothing within an hour, she could make the red-eye flight from Kennedy tonight and relax. The seamless connection from her flight to the cruise liner in Vancouver amazed Lisa. While it was not easy to slip out of her "VP
