Picture a small town in any state of The Great United States of America. In the middle of vast corn fields with every shade of green and golden wheat fields, waving in the summer sun. GOD’ S COUNTRY is where this town is and was. In GOD"S COUNTRY on a quiet street lived a neighborhood of mostly poor black families on the other side of town and on the wrong side of the tracks.
The families were mostly divorced or widowed women with young kids. One of these families was the ROYAL’S. The ROYAL family was made up of MAGICAL ROYAL the mother, DOVE the only girl and the LION and the LAMB the boys of the family. This story is about The LAMB.
Every day in GOD"S COUNTRY was slow and laid back. The kids stayed close to home with -in a block radius so families could watch them bike and play. They would play hide and go seek in the dark hiding in the trees and bushes, while fire flies twinkled in the night, casting a dream affect in the neighborhood.
The LAMB was a bright eyed boy that people said made the sun rise; he was interested in the world as well as the people in it. He was very shy with skin that was the color of golden brown. He had a love for music. The LAMB was not as outgoing as his siblings The DOVE or The LION. They had a loving close knit family, made even closer living in a small apartment.
Every Sunday The ROYAL’S would go to church, MAGICAL thought that this would tame the wild uncontrollable ways of The ROYAL kids. The LAMB would fall asleep listening to the 2 hour sermons, feeling comfortable in the land of GOD and ANGLES and SAINTS and SINNERS. Until it was time to sing, the best part of Sunday and going to church.
Singing was up lifting and brought some joy to The LAMB’S life. The Preacher was a tall thin black man so black he was blue. He was in his 60’s with 8 children of his own. He was a caring man and had a caring wife they both had good hearts and served GOD well.
They liked The ROYAL’S and understood how difficult it was to be a divorced woman raising 3 kids on her own. They helped as much as they could to streer The ROYAL’S on the right path to GOD and being saved. Sometimes knowing it was a losing battle. On one bright sunny day after Church, Diana the daughter of the piano player at our BAPTIST CHURCH and The DOVE got into an argument about who was the best singer of the two. Diana was skinny and had a dark complexion with short black hair, looking more boyish then a little girl with very large brown eyes. Her looks would not be considered beautiful or even cute.
The DOVE on the other hand had beautiful golden brown skin and a smile with dimples; even at a young age was considered very pretty. The DOVE"S voice was like honey; she also played the clarinet and could sing. Everyone in the Choir thought so, every one accept Diana’s mother. Diana’s mother thought her girl was a star, and to keep peace we had to agree.
It was the beginning of MOTOWN RECORDS with black groups forming with 3 or 4 people singing. They were always looking for songs for their artist to sing. As a boast the kids said that we could write songs better than what they heard on the radio.
So they formed a song writing group, The DOVE and The LAMB and Diana and her mother. Diana’s mother would put the lyrics to music and do the sheet music which was important. And she would submit the songs to MOTOWN RECORDS to see if
