    About the Author

    Preface

I, who am known to you as Jesus the Christ, have dictated this trilogy of books for your freedom and enlightenment, and more are forthcoming. They were given in the order in which they appear in this volume, but they can be read in any order.

As for who I am, I am the same I am that is within each of you. That was my message when I was alive two thousand years ago, and that is my message to you today. The man you knew as Jesus exists today in the dimension from which I am communicating. However, I am no longer a man or even a human, but spirit, as you are as well and as you will know yourself to be after you leave this earth. From the dimension where I exist, I am guiding the planet and am with all who pray to me, because I so deeply love the human race and the earth.

Please understand that, although you knew me as a man who lived in ancient times, the body and personality I had then was merely a costume, just as your own body is a temporary costume. I am not bound to the persona of Jesus of Nazareth, although I often assume this persona when appearing or speaking to people, to comply with their expectations. I exist with some individuality in this dimension but no set persona or personality. Some may find this heretical, but so be it.

The man you knew as Jesus also exists today within each of you in spirit. The consciousness that is behind all life is no different than your own. They are one and the same. Your being is meant to shine as gloriously as I was said to have shone on resurrection day. Resurrection is a metaphor for what is possible within every human being. You are divine.

My purpose is to bring you this very good news: You are divine and, now more than ever before in history, it is possible to realize your divinity, which is to say your loving and peaceful nature. Through simple awareness, inquiry, and a willingness to see the truth, you can become free of all that causes you to suffer and free to create the life you wish to live, which is the life the Father wishes for you as well. You are meant to be happy, and the willingness to explore and expose the false and limiting beliefs that keep you suffering and imprisoned is the key to your divinity and to everything you need to be happy.

I am speaking to you through this author because she has the ability to transmit my words and because she has been devoted to me in many lifetimes as a religious person. However, you do not have to be religious or devoted to me to benefit from these teachings. You simply need to be open to investigating the mystery of who you are.

I have not used Christian terminology in particular, because I am not a Christian or a Jew or a Muslim or a Hindu, nor do I belong to any other religion or sect. I represent and have always represented the Consciousness within you. I reflected the Love that you are so that you could know it within you. That was my purpose. I did not come to be worshipped but to show you the way to love and worship all of life.

Some will call this message new age, but there is nothing new about it. It is the message of everyone who has realized Christ Consciousness within themselves, which you will do one day as well, if you haven’t already. Please do not put a label on this message, as any label only causes separation, and my intent is to unite, not separate.

My message was always one of peace, not separation, and this is my message now. Peace on earth will not come from seeing yourself as a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu, or anything else, but by seeing yourself as you truly are, as I see you and know you, as the Father sees and knows you. When you can see the face of God in your neighbor and love and care for your neighbor as you would yourself, then peace will come to earth. Any belief that interferes with that must go. It is time now to live in harmony with each other.

Some may say that these teachings are not the same as the ones I gave long ago. But these teachings are the ones I would give today if I were alive, and they are in words that I might use today. In the past, my voice and language was the voice and language of those times. For now, this is the voice and language I am choosing to use.

In the past, my teachings had to be couched in parables, but today they can be plainly spoken. The world is a very different place, and the culture you live in is a very different one. More importantly, consciousness has evolved and is finally ready for these words. In the past, these teachings were for the few who might benefit. Now many can gain from them. So, I offer them to all who are willing to consider them. May they carry you more speedily to the peace and love you so long for and deserve.

    BOOK I: Choice and Will

In this first book, we will explore the mystery of choice and will. In the spiritual journey from being imprisoned by your conditioning to being free, or fully enlightened, choice and will play a key role. The road to enlightenment is marked by an evolving relationship to the issue of choice and will. Where initially, one’s free will is subsumed by conditioning and people stray little from their conditioning, as spiritual evolution progresses, people learn to use their will in a way that increases their peace and happiness and lessens their suffering. With further progress, one’s free will becomes indistinguishable from divine will, or Thy will. At that point, it is difficult to talk about will at all, because choosing is effortless and just happens without a sense of choosing. What is there to choose against when there is no longer a personal will in conflict with divine will?

Some of you may be interested in reading this because I, Jesus, have dictated it, while others may reject it for the same reason. However, the authorship is not the point. Choosing to believe or not believe that I am behind this book is not as significant as whether you choose to believe the words in it. That choice is much more important, because that choice could be transformative.

You are here deciding whether or not to continue reading, so what will make that choice? What is choosing to continue even now and what will choose to continue or not in the next moment? And what might cause you to put the book down? A judgment? A belief? A conclusion? A feeling? Where did that come from, and is that a good guide for making your choice? Can you trust that? Do you trust that?

What is the basis for your choices? How do you know what to choose? This is the mystery we will explore together. You have been given the great gift of free will. How will you use it? The answer to that question determines your experience of life.

Chapter 1: The Gift of Free Will

You have been given the gift of free will. This gift requires one thing: consciousness. By consciousness, I mean awareness of the possibility of choice. Without this awareness, human beings would not be very different from animals, who function and survive primarily through instinct and other conditioning. Similarly, if you are not aware that you have a choice and if you don’t exercise it, you also will function mostly according to your instincts and conditioning.

Human beings, like animals, are born with software, to use a metaphor, which largely determines how they respond to life. This software is designed to optimize survival but not other things essential to human beings, such as love, peace, happiness, and fulfillment. In fact, this software often interferes with achieving happiness and fulfillment.

This software is primitive, although it has some functionality. It is useful in its proper domain, which is survival, but ineffectual and even counterproductive outside that domain. For instance, if you see a forest fire, this software motivates you to flee from the fire. However, when faced with the stresses of modern life, that same programming might cause you to flee your responsibilities or behave badly in your relationships. Fight or flight is a functional response only for issues related to survival.

Fear is useful in responding to immediate threats to physical safety. It is not useful in dealing with the ordinary demands, including survival issues, of modern life, when fear is counterproductive. If you rely on your software to determine your responses to nonlife-threatening circumstances, your responses will be governed by the primitive, programmed, part of yourself, which is often called the ego.

The ego is the software that gives you the sense that you are in here, inside your body, and everything else is out there, outside of and separate from you. The ego makes you feel alone and vulnerable to harm from others and life in general. You feel like it’s me against the world.

The ego also makes it seem like you are your body and your mind. It seems like who you are is the body and the thinker of the thoughts that go through your mind. However, this is hardly an adequate description of who you are. Your body and your mind are yours, after all, so who is this you to which the body and mind belong?

While something experiences the body and something experiences thinking, there is actually nobody who is thinking those thoughts. Thinking is happening, but it isn’t happening to somebody or being done by somebody. You cannot find a who that thinking is happening to. It is just happening. If you argue, "Well, I am thinking," then who is this I? You cannot find it. It is just a concept of I. It is just a thought about I.

This truth is a bit obscure, but you can discover it for yourself by simply looking to see if there is someone in there who is thinking and by looking to see where your thoughts come from. When you investigate, you discover that who you think you are is not as tangible as you may have believed.

The ego, or the programmed self, creates a sense of self and an identity from the thoughts about yourself. The sense of self created by the ego is often called the false self to distinguish it from your true nature. It is false because it doesn’t actually exist beyond thoughts about yourself. All the false self is, is thoughts about yourself.

These thoughts tell you who you are, and you declare this to others: I do not like green eggs and ham! People rarely question their thoughts, where they come from, and if they are even true. They accept their mind’s description of themselves and hone this description daily with new information: I do so like green eggs and ham. (from the popular children’s book, Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss)

This description of yourself is always changing to fit new information and experiences, but who is it that updates this information? Are you even aware of your ideas about yourself being updated? And do you always agree with the description? Who is it that can even observe this process? It seems that there is someone or something shaping the description and someone or something who is aware of this description and can agree or disagree with it. That’s interesting. Which one are you?

It is as if there is a computer taking in information, processing it, and updating your self-images, like updates to your software. In fact, that is what the brain is. It is a computer that stores, processes, and accesses information. The information that goes into this computer comes from many different sources, which is why the information is sometimes contradictory and might even be false.

The brain records information, but it doesn’t have the wisdom to evaluate it: garbage in, garbage out, as the saying goes. When the brain does evaluate information, it does so based on other stored information. This process can hardly pass as wisdom, although it often does.

Fortunately, something else does have wisdom, although what that is, is rather mysterious. So, what is going on here? The brain stores and processes information, but you are much more than this computer-mind, aren’t you? Isn’t it more likely that you are what is able to be aware of and bring wisdom to the information that your brain and other brains have processed?

This ability to be conscious of and think about thoughts distinguishes human beings from animals, whose ability to do this is rudimentary. And this is where free will comes in. You not only have the ability to be conscious of your thoughts—your software—but also the ability to choose what you think, that is, what you believe and how you define yourself! Moreover, you have the ability to choose how you will respond to your thoughts. In other words, unlike animals, you can override your software if you choose. This allows human beings to evolve by leaps and bounds, far beyond the ability that any other creature has to evolve.

Through this amazing ability to choose, you become a co-creator with Life. Free will makes it possible for you to co-create with Life! What an amazing gift that is! You get to try your hand at shaping life alongside Life itself. There is little in life that is quite as exhilarating and fun as creating.

Your ability to create, including making art, telling stories, composing music, writing books, producing machines and new products, building institutions, uncovering new information, developing technology, designing and engineering structures, and discovering new medicines, sets you apart from the rest of creation. The ability to override and operate beyond your instincts and the rest of your software—this gift of free will—is responsible for so many wonderful creations.

Free will also allows you to become a destroyer of life. Free will even allows that. It allows you to destroy life, destroy love, destroy peace, and destroy your happiness. It allows you to be hateful, make war, be greedy, damage your environment, and be afraid. It allows you to make choices that lead to terrible outcomes. So, free will comes at a cost: To enjoy the benefits of it, you will also suffer the effects until you learn to use your will more wisely.

From the standpoint of the Infinite, because the Infinite honors free will and because it gave you this gift, no choice is ever considered wrong or bad. However, some choices lead to better outcomes than others. So, to say that there are no wrong choices does not mean that there are not paths that are best not taken. But it is often difficult to know this about a choice beforehand.

Through trial and error, you discover what is true and not true for you, what is beneficial and wise, and what is not. And even so-called bad or unpleasant outcomes can be appreciated for the inner gifts they bestow, such as courage, perseverance, wisdom, strength, patience, and compassion.

The benevolence of life is such that no matter what you choose, that choice will contribute to your evolution. Suffering ensures that, and this is how it works: Evolution has a certain trajectory: It goes toward love. If your choices take you away from love, you suffer. That suffering will inevitably put you back on course. You get to choose, of course, how long that will take.

Because suffering serves a purpose in pointing you toward Home, even suffering is a gift. Every choice either celebrates life and furthers creation or shows you the unworthiness of that choice and, in so doing, furthers your understanding.

The choices that lead to suffering always teach you something—usually a number of things. You may not realize what you have learned or be able to put that into words, but through every choice you make, life teaches you—it changes you. The choices that lead to the most suffering often reap the most gifts, the greatest learning.

What is learned by suffering? At the very least, compassion. That is no small thing and not likely to be learned through other means. Empathy and compassion are only the beginning, however, for they naturally, although not immediately, flower into a desire to relieve suffering in others. Everyone who finds joy in serving others has no doubt suffered greatly in this lifetime or in others.

Service is love, is it not? Love is identification with another as one’s own self. Giving to others as you would like to be given to naturally flows from this identification with others. Love is one of the sweetest fruits of suffering.

Furthermore, if the experience of suffering is investigated, it will reveal the real cause of suffering, and that wisdom is an immeasurably valuable prize. The seeds of freedom are within the very thing that seems to imprison.

Love is inescapable. If you fail to love, you feel the pain of a closed heart. That suffering underlines the importance of love, and so you seek love. That seeking eventually leads to finding love—to learning to love. Through every little act of love, you make your way Home. Whatever you choose, even choosing not to love, moves you closer to love and ultimately to your enlightenment.

You cannot help but become enlightened. With every act of love, you become lighter, more filled with light, as the darkness is cast out. What is this darkness? It is ignorance of the Light: ignoring the Light while giving attention to something else. The darkness is nothing, really. It doesn’t exist but is merely the seeming absence of something that does exist: Light.

What is Light? Light is another word for Love, for the energy of and behind all life. There is nothing but Light. It is the substance, the underlying ground of being, of which the universe—creation—is composed and from which everything is born.

The only thing that can obscure the Light is acknowledging something else instead. This is a choice, of course. You are free to choose to acknowledge the truth of your unity with all creation or to acknowledge the sense of separateness, fear, and alienation, which are the byproducts of your software. Ignorance is believing that your software accurately represents the truth about who you are and about reality. Enlightenment is knowing the truth about who you are and about reality—and living that truth.

Most human beings are in a prison of sorts. It is a prison created by seeing themselves and life as their thoughts describe, without realizing that their thoughts do not accurately represent reality. People who live in this prison do not question their thoughts and are not even particularly aware of them. They respond to their thoughts as if under a spell, as if commanded to follow them, as if they have no free will. They are like puppets, with their software pulling the strings, asleep to life, asleep to reality. They are living an unexamined life.

This creates a hell on earth, because the software is not simply stored information; it is corrupted with lies, fear, selfishness, and limiting beliefs. The software keeps people prisoners of their own fear, prisoners of lies, and prisoners of their own base emotions. There is little chance of happiness for those who respond so unthinkingly to their software, only suffering.

Many remain imprisoned, angry, feeling victimized, and blaming others for their pain without realizing that they are
