    Keeping David

Hello! Janine called to an apparently empty house. Bobby, David? Anybody home? No answer. The lights were on upstairs, so she knew the boys were home. It was simply a matter of getting them to come downstairs. I’ve got pizza. One barbecue chicken, one spinach and anchovy. She loved her son, and his friend, she just could not understand how they could eat the crap they managed scarf, as they would say.

She set the pies down on the counter and braced herself for the herd of elephants heading down the stairs. She had actually missed that sound while her son was away at college. When he called her to say he was bringing a friend home for the summer, she was thrilled to know that the house would no longer be empty, at least for a few months. She had assumed he was bringing home a girl, and was surprised when David had first walked through the door.

Sitting at the Portland bus depot, Janine had been chewing her nails and tapping her feet, waiting impatiently for Bobby. She would scan the lobby every few minutes, in case she had missed him and his friend. Another incoming bus was announced, and she looked to the doors once again. When Bobby walked through the door she jumped up and ran to him, squealing in excitement like a teenager as she wrapped herself around him in a bear hug.

Mom, you're killing me, Bobby wheezed, peeling Janine off of him. He then turned to a very handsome young man standing beside him. Mom, this is David. Janine grasped David's outstretched hand, thick fingers, calluses, scabbed knuckles. He had fighter's hands, but kind eyes.

Oh my, she breathed. Then it struck her: Bobby had brought home a man. She swallowed the lump in her throat, and decided to be supportive. You have good taste. Both Bobby and David laughed out loud. What? she asked confused.

Mom, Bobby said, still laughing, David is just a friend. He's my roommate and I'm dating his twin sister Emma.

Oh thank God, Janine gasped. Well, where is she?

She and her roommate, Corrine, are in New York, David said in a husky voice with a soft London accent. Janine had always wanted to go to London. They got a fancy internship at the Embassy. The sound of his voice touched all the nerves in Janine's body sending little electric shock waves surging through her. She was suddenly very warm and started fanning herself before she realized Bobby was speaking and she turned her attention to him.

Yeah, they packed their bags and told us to 'go fishing', Bobby chimed in. Janine laughed, but had trouble taking her focus off of David. She spent the drive home constantly looking in her rear view mirror at the bright blue eyes of the boy in her back seat, absently giving the appropriate interjections while Bobby prattled on about his first year at college. Mentally she chided herself for looking at a young boy that way, but she just couldn't help herself. When he spoke, his accent reminded her of all her youthful dreams of moving to London someday and working in fashion. Dreams of a young girl, she reminded herself while again forcing her attention away from the young man she had no business ogling.

Now Janine simply enjoyed the company of the boys, and the very pleasant sight of David from behind when he wasn’t aware she was watching. She brightened as the stampede rounded the corner into the kitchen.

    Hey mom.

    Hello Mrs. Stevenson.

Please David. How many times do I have to ask you to call me Janine? Or Mom. All of his other friends do.

I’ll call you Janine. You’re too pretty to call you Mum. David smiled, Bobby pretended to vomit, and Janine’s milky white skin turned the same color as her flaming red hair.

Well boys, enjoy your dinner. I’m just going to clean up around the house, do some laundry, and watch a movie. Holler if you need anything.

Hey Mom, can I borrow one of Dad’s old suits tomorrow. I got an interview for a summer internship down at the local T.V. station and I want to look good.

Of course dear. But if you’re working, what will David be doing?

Not to worry Mrs. --- I mean Janine. I'm filling in for one of the trainers at the gym downtown. He's going on a tournament tour this summer. Figure if I’m going to stay here all summer, might as well do something constructive. David was
