    PROLOGUE: THE THRESHOLD

As she finished packing her bags, a young woman by the name of Nikki was ready to leave and start a new life. Her life had taken turns that were out of her control and were too much for this Southern California girl. She was newly single, she just lost her job, but yet needed something more in her life than flipping burgers. Her whole life consisted of following orders from others. She didn’t know how to go about thinking for herself, or doing something for the benefit of herself rather than the benefit of other. This new turn in life inspired her to finally live out loud so to speak.

So, Nikki took her savings, packed up her car, and got ready to bid Los Angeles goodbye for good. She didn’t know where she was going to go, but just getting into her car and driving away was her best option. There was more to this young girl of 23; too long had she been labeled as a freak for seeing things that weren’t there. Too long was she tired of having to justify her fears to people who didn’t understand, so she gave up her own dreams to make others happy. She was finally done.

Nikki didn’t see herself as beautiful. Instead, she thought herself rather plain, probably because of her low self-esteem. She had long brown hair that glistened in the sunlight. She wasn’t model skinny, and she had curves. Nikki didn’t work out, and while she wasn’t fat, she wasn’t hard to the touch. She was soft, and her porcelain pale skin made her desirable among the men who wanted a change from the stereotypical California beach girl. Nikki dressed in black and dark colors most of the time, wearing pants and a V-neck shirt on this day.

Nikki went outside to finish packing the last of her things into the car, when a familiar black car honked from the street, and pulled into the driveway.

What’s he doing here? How is this even possible? she thought. Nikki thought this man would be no more than a distant memory by now. He was moving on to a new world, where she couldn’t join him. It wasn’t entirely his fault, but the situation could have been prevented.

As the black car came to a stop, a young man with dark hair stepped out. Nikki remembered him well. She remembered the night that he first asked her out on a date, the first time they kissed, they first time they made love, she remembered everything. His name was Evan. He was charming, he had a deep voice that made her weak in the knees, and made the ground shook. It was too soon to see him. The whole reason why she was moving was to get away from the memory because she couldn’t control herself when she thought of him.

    Nikki took a deep breath.

    Hey stranger... she said.

    Hey, he replied.

She didn’t understand why he was here. Did he want to make amends? Did he want to say sorry? Did he start to feel regret and wanted to turn back the hands of time? There were so many unanswered questions and
