    Chapter One

You're dressed like an egg, Caroline said, as she looked her friend up and down.

Marianne White—Mannie to her friends—shrugged. Yeah, well, whatever. I need the money. I know. Only too well. This job was something she'd not forget. Mannie was encased in a large white egg suit. It had been made for a much taller person. So, instead of the bottom of the egg sitting like a pair of panties , it rested midway down on her thighs making her waddle as she walked. Her face was visible through a small cut out and her arms hung limp at her shell encased body. To add to this lovely ensemble, her legs were covered in red and white striped tights and on her feet? They were big, clod-hopping white lace up shoes. She carried a big basket of bright, foil covered chocolate Easter eggs. Already Mannie was pretty much over Easter.

But why are you dressed like an egg?

Mannie sighed. Because I didn't want to be dressed as a bunny.

    Bunnies are cute.

Yeah but it's still hot here. Mannie lived in the tropical city of Cairns. It was at the top end of Australia, in the state of Queensland. They had only two seasons. Sweaty hot and bloody hot. I would sweat to death in all that fur. It didn't matter that it was April and technically Autumn.

Caroline looked her up and down. And the egg is better how?

It's hollow and I have only have my bra and panties on underneath.

    You're nuts.

Not having money does that to you. When they offered her the promo gig at the Marlin Coast Shopping Centre, in the heart of Cairns, she took it. The pay was excellent mainly due to the fact you had to dress up in a silly suit and deal with the public who were not always pleasant to deal with.

    I couldn't do it.

That wasn't the first time an acquaintance had said that to her. Sometimes you have to do crap jobs to pay the bills. Ever since being made redundant in her last job, Mannie had taken on whatever temping jobs were offered to her as there were so few permanent jobs out there and what jobs were on offer were highly competed for.

    You do the craziest jobs.

They pay the bills. Besides, Mannie wasn't one to sit on her hands and bemoan the unemployment situation like so many others. Hard times happened and you dealt with them or went under. Going under wasn't an option. So, Mannie waitressed, filed, gave out information, counted dogs who weren't registered, worked in factories, shuffled paperwork and now, she was a big, fat white egg for a couple of days over Easter. It wasn't like it was going to be a career and it would pay the rent.

    "How long's your shift?'

Too bloody long. I have an hour left to go. Mannie would be happy to go home now. The kids drove her mad with their incessant pushing and shoving and greediness in their snatching up of the chocolate eggs. But at least she wasn't the bunny who was getting the shit kicked out of him by feral kids yanking on his tail, jumping on his back or punching and kicking him while trying to drive him down into the highly polished floor of the forecourt they were
