A Real Apprentice

About this ebook
Have you ever wondered exactly what a REAL APPRENTICE is, NOT one of those that make good T.V. and usually with a well paid job already. Oh No,an apprentice is usually one straight from school or college who serves a fully indentured 5 year period learning a craft, ending up fully skilled. Recent changes to what was the norm are 3 year NVQ and module systems of training, but read my book to find out what I think of that.especially in Engineering that involves public safety.
I would like to explain that although the book is filled with anecdotes that I hope readers will find light hearted and amusing, my escapades never detracted in any way from the excellent training I received during the apprenticeship I had. I am really pleased that there is a bit of a swing back towards apprenticeships these days with two of my grand sons now ex apprentices. Basically in Marine and Electrical Engineering they will never, ever be out of work.
If you or your acquaintances were apprentices in any of the major U.K. industries from the 1950’s on, you may well know of the great time to be experienced growing up, the scrapes young lads got into. Dancing to the end of an era swing bands, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Ted Heath and then the dramatic change to Rock and Roll, jiving to Bill Hayley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry to name a few.
Looking back I sometimes cannot believe what we got up to even now, however I hope my writings interest and entertain readers and sponsors alike with my experiences from that time. If you were an apprentice from the 1950's compare your life to mine, have you a book in YOU perhaps ! To that end, did or have YOU an ongoing interesting life and work history ?

Now retired I live in a very pleasant South Coast area in Hampshire U.K.although always have lived within the surrounding 10 miles. Married 59 years to Margaret we now have an extended family most recent additions being Ruby our first great grand daughter, now nearly 11, Amalie age 4 years, Gracie just 4, Zac 18 months and Archie 14 months. Interested in all kinds of music I Popular Classics, Swing band music I absolutely love, Count Basi & singer Joe Williams, Lionel Hampton, but my all time favourite is Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman. Also a fan of early Rock & Roll, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley from the 1950's era. The Beatles are way, way out in a place of their own. Like some Pop Music and Ballad Singers such as Matt Monro, Ella Fitzgerald, 'Ole Blue Eyes', In my teens with 4 fellow apprentices was a founder member of a MIME group, 'The Wranglers' who entertained the youth of the 1950's at various Southampton Dance Halls, Theatres and Cinemas for a couple of years. Enjoyed 16 years as a football referee under the auspices of Hampshire F.A. reaching County standard as a class 1 referee. Unfortunately never consistant enough to hit the top level, nevertheless I hope I contributed enough to be appreciated, althouth I must admit to being chased up the pitch a few times by irate players unhappy with a decision or two! Always enjoyed football though never good enough to play to a decent standard so pleased to be able to put a little back into football by refereeing. I have NO motorcycles at all now, though my main love was and still is Norton motorcycles, not only owning them, but touring all over Europe before and after the Berlin Wall came down. A very understanding wife allowed me to tour Europe every other year for 20 years and holiday with her on alternate years. My solo motorcycle trip to visit a new friend in Hamburg via Osnabrook and Berlin in 1981 was somewhat hair raising. My Sisters husband Tony, an Insurance rep arranged a few days stopover at the 14th Royal Hussars Tank Regiment barracks at Spandau, right next door to the Prison block where Hess, Hitlers deputy was being held. Looking back I must have been mad venturing into the Eastern Block at a rather sensitive time and on my own! The week I spent in Berlin had an American Spy Car passenger shot dead by an East German guard. I am brought from this holiday onto my favourite type of holiday these days, Cruising. Cruising the Baltic countries, West Indies, Cape Verdi, Canada, USA and the East and West Med in relaxed mode just cannot be beat. Have found the old saying "I don't know how I found the time to retire" is true, I'm always doing more around the family now than I ever did before. I have found some time however to write, starting in 2007 it took 7 years to get part 1 into print, lets hope books 2 and 3 take a lot less time. To stop going GA GA I obtained an SIA Security certificate taking a part time job in Cruise Ship Security in Southampton Docks and very interesting indeed, perhaps a few chapers in book 3. I am now into Nature growing both tomatoes and cucumbers in Spring and Summer, Astronomy, the Big Bang through Professor Brian Cox (just how, why ARE we here?) and battling local issues close to my heart, although Photography if and when I had time, has taken a back seat.
