Chapter 1
Jerry’s my friend! He trusts me. I can’t do that to him!
Alex shouted.
Jerry paced back and forth in his cage. His ears lifted. His whiskers twitched.
We’ve already discussed this,
Alex's father said. School is starting soon and you’re joining the 4H club. You’ll help me with the dairy cows and you’ll raise a calf by yourself in the spring. You won’t have time for a mouse. Now, pick it up and let’s go.
Alex tried to argue but it was no use. He took the cage gently in his hands and followed his father outside to the field.
Don’t worry, son. Your mouse will be happy living out here with other mice.
He walked away leaving Alex alone with the cage.
Jerry saw the tears in the boy’s eyes.
Alex waited for his father to disappear inside the house, and then carried the cage into the barn. Newly baled hay lined the barn walls ready to feed the cows during the coming Nova Scotia, Canada winter. Alex put the cage on one of the bales and opened the door.
I’ll leave you here,
