    Chapter One: Introduction

    Juno and the Paycock by Sean O’Casey was first performed in 1924 at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland.

    It is a highly acclaimed play by this famous playwright from Ireland. The play is said to be one of the most highly regarded and most frequently performed plays in Ireland.

    The play is set in the early 1920s. Most of the action takes place in the working class tenements of Dublin. It was the time of Civil War in Ireland.

    Juno and the Paycock is the second of the playwright’s famous trilogy known as Dublin Trilogy. The other two plays in that Trilogy are The Shadow of a Gunman and The Plough and the Stars. They were first staged in the year 1923 and 1926 respectively.

    The play was an instant hit and it played for a second week for the first time in the history of theatre.

    Juno and the Paycock has been reproduced for other media. It has also been adapted into a movie in England. The movie version was produced in the year 1930 and it was directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    The play is basically about the Boyle family. During the Irish Civil War, they happen to be living in the Dublin tenements.
